Posted: Sat Feb 19, 2005 6:45 am Post subject: I turned a 250 gig drive into a door stop!
I downloaded the XBOXHDM files. I wanted to create a 250 gig drive. I FTP'd the entire contents of my "C" drive to the "C" directory and everything in my "E" drive to the "E" directory. Than I copied eprom.bin to the eprom directory. Used the ISO tolol to create the ISO and Nero to burn (at slowest speed) the ISO to a DVD. I booted the dvd and ran the Linux program. I chose #1 to create an XBox drive. It created the partition than asked to format I typed yes. Than it copied the files in my C and E folders to the hard drive. Than the menu returned where I chose to read the HD key into a text file than created the DOS boot disk. At this point I placed the drive nto te XBox (soft modded) the xbox gave an error indicating that ithe drive was not locked. I put the drive back into the PC Booted up the newly created floppy ( created with XBOXHDM and chose to lock the drive. I than put the drive back into the XBox and got te error that the drive could not be unlocked. The lock program when ran searched the floppy for the text file containing the hd password. Finally I put the drive back into the PC booted the floppy and tried to unlock the drive. The drive will not unlock. Even if I manually enter the hd key.
Today, I tried on an older 4 gig drive to see what was going on. I followed the proceedures all the way to the locking part but stopped. I than tried to look at the drive with the included xbox file manager and discovered that all the partitions are corrupt on the 2nd drive. I suspect the same for the first. So I suppose there is no way to unlock the 250 gig? Wish I had toasted the 4 gig first. BTW this was downloaded from the download section. I read that AID1.1 was getting some corruption from the dl process, could this also be the case here?
Next, after my hair grows back in and I have something to pull out again I was reading that Norton Ghost will clone the drive over using bit to bit copy? Is this true? And why, if you are not actually writing to the original xbox drive would you need to unlock the drive first?
If there is an easier way I'd sure appreciate all the help I can get. The XBox was softmodded with the Softmod Deluxe 1.1 and ))&. Currently running Evox.
Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

If the 250gb drive was recently purchased just return it to the manufaturer or reseller for an exchange!
edit- if not buy a new one and do the old swap trick.. to return the old one _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic

Have you used xbrowser to read the partitions created by xboxhd?
Check all the partitions created just to make sure none of them are corrupted, I've had this problem several times. If this is the case simply choose option 1 to create the hard drive from scratch again and it will cure the problem.
But remember, run xbrowser first to check the partitions, if they are ok, ignore everything I have said and I'm sorry for wasting you're time.
Oh, by the way, you'll know if a partition is corrupt because there will be files with a load of question marks for file names in the partition!
If you backed up you drive using evox (which should be the first thing you do) you should have a text file in E:\Backup\hddinfo.txt this will give you the hdd key.
I use xboxhd the same as you for creating my xbox hd's, but I use a floppy disk created from the linux menu for locking and unlocking, this way if you make a mistake with the password it will have ben written into a file on A:\logs\hddpw.txt only use HDLOCK, HDUNLOCK and HDDISAB.
There is another file called UNLOCKX that can be used but, this has been reported to screw some drives up!
Hope this helps. _________________ XBOX V1.0

i've got the same problem too. i ran xboxhdm, followed all the instructions, put the hd in my xbox, and the xbox said it was unlocked. so i put the hd back in the pc, and locked it, and put it in the xbox and it said it could access it still. (don't remember the error code). so i put it back in my pc, and booted up, except my pc only booted to the bios screen. it said the primary hard drive had an error, and now i can't access it at all. i don't know what to do right now, since i don't really know linux very well, but a friend suggested to me to try knoppix to see if it can access the drive.
as well, i tried some diagnostic tools from maxtor and it gave me a diagnostic code of deaae671, but i can't find what this error is on their website. another thing is that my log file that i got on my diskette disappeared too. if anyone could help, i'd appreciate it. thanx

If you know any computer techs, or someone that works at a best buy, they can probably get you a Manufacturers support disc. Then you can preforma 'security erase' which I believe zeros out the entire drive & then it will unlock itself automatically once it knows the certain type of erase has been done.
You can also send it to guys on ebay that offer the service for $20-$40. A lot more online compies are offering the service now too. I hear there is one company that does it over the net, the drive just has to be attached to the PC! _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic

nothingbutcup,
how u know it's a doorstep? I've never made a hard drive one without being able to fix it. Only reason i have problems with hard drives are when they get old. Security Erase fixes most everything. _________________ Brandon Cossette

well, i don't know for sure. according to the maxtor tech support person i talked to, he said the hard drive has failed. since it's under warranty, they'll replace it, but i'd rather get it fixed now then wait for them. how can i do this security erase? if i need the maxtor utility disk that was mentioned above, i have no way to get it. i've tried several stores, and have got nothing

it don't matter now, it's being sent in on the warranty, and i am going to buy a western digital today to so if i mess it up, i can just go to the store and replace it quicker. i dont think i'll have to do that this time though

Quick tip, if you have problems loading games, delete the e:\cache folder, all will be well after this. _________________
