Hi,
I Have a Xbox v1.6 softmodded by a friend (007 exploit / fonts exploit / PBL) few days ago. All is working perfectly, but I wanted to replace the hard disk by a new one. I read many tutorials, web sites, and found out that I have to lock the new harddrive and all that...
Then, I purchased an 160GB Hitachi HDD (HDS722516VLAT80).
I downloaded an evox boot cd (because I am using an UnleashX dashboard, which doesn't provide a bios/eeprom backup function), made a backup of bios & eeprom.
Next, I downloaded xboxhdm, copied my eeprom.bin, C & E xbox drives into the good folders, made the iso and burned it. I didn't have any problem so far.
I unplugged all my usual HDD and plugged the brand new one. I disabled auto-detection for this disk, in order to be able to lock it. Afterwards I booted on xboxhdm without any problem, make the fatx partitions, formatted. It was time to lock up the drive.
Here come the problems : I have 3 different key.. one given at the end of hddinfo.txt (file made by evox backup function), named XboxHDKey in this file. UnleashX system informations give the same key : let's call it KEY_7C24 (because there are the 4 first chars of the key, heh).
Another key given by hddinfo.txt, named HDDLockDisablePassword (here, let's say KEY_BB21) was present.. as well as a third, KEY_E09E, extracted via hdtool (xboxhdm cd) from eeprom.bin.
One, two.. I tried the 3 of them, without any success : XBox keeps giving me a error 6 (cannot unlock the disk). Then I did what I should have done from the beginning : trying to unlock the original xbox drive. The good key for this was KEY_BB21. Tried to put it back like this in the console : error 5 (disk not locked), as I expected. I relocked this HDD with the same key, which booted fine on UnleashX again.
Thinking I had mistyped the key for my new HDD, I retried to lock it with the KEY_BB21 key (checked tons of time if I was typing it well), since I was sure it was the good one. And.. error 6. I really don't understand. Is that because this is a 160GB drive ? From what I read, I should have 137GB available with a non-LBA48 bios (I was planning to upgrade the FBL bios to an Xecutor2 4983.06 after being sure the disk was working).
I tried some HDD hotswap too, to lock the disk with the evox boot cd.. wasn't more successful !
Thank you for your help, I really do not know what to do know to make this damn hard drive work...

When I always use option 3 on the Main Menu of Xboxhdm, then just type lockhd -a and it gets the hddkey from the eeprom.bin, however sometimes then eeprom you extract will not be the correct eeprom, i've saw this happen a few times, I would try installing evox as an app then trying to do the backup, and also possibly trying config magic. _________________

OK, after many hours, I finally managed to make my new HDD working. Here is the method I used :
1) Didn't touch my original HDD.
2) Made the new one unlocked.
3) Connected both my hard-drives on power with an Y molex cable.
4) Installed Metoo-M8+1.6-06 as a bios with Metoo-PBL on my original HDD.
5) Installed ConfigMagic on my original HDD.
6) Ran ConfigMagic.
7) Unplugged IDE cable from the original HDD and plug the new one (hotswap).
8) Selected "Unlock HDD" (even if it is already unlocked) to refresh informations in ConfigMagic.
9) Got a new lock key, wrote it down.
10) Tried to lock with ConfigMagic... froze.
11) Put the new HDD back in my PC and locked it with xboxhdm, with the new lock code.
12) Put the new HDD in the xbox.
13) Worked !
If it can help anyone..
