2 questions actually, How would someone go about softmodding an xbox, and can you give me pros and cons. I have already done 2 xboxs with excuter chips.

2nd question is there any software out there that would let you use aol instant messanger, yahoo or msn via the xbox???

Thought it would be kind of cool...

As someone who has purchased a softmodded xbox and found the downside all I can say is dont bother with them, burning the TSOP(on board bios is dangerous, I fried mine trying to go back to standard). With the modchip you can always go back to xbox standard, but with the softmod your stuck. the clock does work properly, and if you have problems is it the softmod or your xbox playing up

I lost bad by accidently buying a softmodded xbox, but then mine never worked properly.

Please don't confuse TSOP Flashing with softmodding. To softmod you never need to open the box, and it loads the bios off of the hard drive. You should be able to always boot original media, so if you don't delete the gamesaves you should be able to undo anything you may mess up, which brings me to one con of the softmod, you have to be careful not to change the wrong files or it will stop working.

You have to have one of 3 games, MechAssault, 007:Agent Under Fire, or Splinter Cell; you will also need an Action Replay. All of this will cost roughly $40 or so, thus being about the same price as a modchip, but they are reusable for multiple softmods.
