So, I get a corrupted save when I try to copy the sid5 installer to the hdd
I have a compatible usb drive and I tried to follow every guide ever. (I also tried to format the usb with fatx formatter to no avail.)
Best regards

I'd say that the chances are that windowsio has just made a very easy to make mistake when copying the game saves (Splinter Cell?) to the Xbox.
The Xbox-HQ SID download has all the game saves separately zipped so when you unzip the main folder they're all still zipped.
Assuming you're using Splinter Cell (NTSC) you need to unzip that exploit game save and the larger SID installer game save. Inside both those unzipped folders are a UDATA folder and inside that is the actual numbered game save. Those two numbered folders (5553000c and 21585554) are the only things you copy over to the Xbox.
If you tried to copy the zipped game save folders or even the UDATA folders to the Xbox the MS dash will not recognize them as game saves. Depending on what you mistakenly copied it will probably show them as "Unknown" and/or report the saves as corrupted.
I've always thought that SID (BTW not the only Xbox tool that does this) putting the games saves in a UDATA folder seems like a good idea but is actually confusing for some new users. They have no idea what the UDATA folder is and, understandably, sometimes copy that rather than just the game save it contains.
I suspect it has to be done that way for SID/AID when installed as an app from the installer menu or disc but for these initial softmodding purposes packing them in a UDATA folder is an unnecessary extra folder level.

Has he confirmed that because it is unusual even for a supposedly incompatible flash drive?
There are many ways a flash drive may not work with a Xbox, it can format correctly but then report unformatted on reattachment. I've had about half a dozen different fails with flash drives even one where I was using two identical flash drives as memory cards quite successfully for months before deciding to use one for softmodding.
All I did was copy the files to it using my Win XP laptop + Xplorer360 but the moment I reattached it to the Xbox the screen started pulsing in a very odd way. I made the mistake of testing the other flash drive and it did the same. To this this day despite multiple FATX reformats on Xbox or using the FATX Formatter tool neither can now be use with the Xbox.
But I've never heard or read of a flash drive actually copying the softmod files to the HDD and those being reported as corrupted afterwards. Even on the flash drive itself the Xbox sees anything incorrectly ID-ed for UDATA/TDATA or in two or more folder levels as a corrupt save.
I know because I have a 4GB permanently attached flash drive as memory card with lots of backups in sub-folders and they all report as unknown/corrupt saves when on the MS dash.
So, even if he has now actually fixed the problem by using a new flash drive I'd still reckon there was a good chance something like that was the original problem.
