Hi all.
Congratulations on a fine site first of all.
I have been somewhat thrown in at the deep end of the original Xbox pool.
My young son was recently given an original Xbox by his much older cousin.
After getting a cable for it (lost we presume), we fired it up, set the date and time and played with it for a couple of hours. So far so good.
The next day he went to play on it, but only got as far as the X logo.
Further research led me to ascertain that it had an error 16 problem.
After much more searching online I believe that this is not an irretrievable situation, but as we don't know anyone with an Xbox, hotswopping does not seem an option.....unless I can get a clean 4560 dash file, and use my PC.
Without opening up the unit I am unable to tell if it has been modified, but with my knowledge of the owner I seriously doubt that it has.... in any form.
Trying to find any sort of files for this is hard enough, some coming with extra little hidden programs, or some incomplete. I have managed to download a complete? file of Auto Installer Deluxe but I can't see that it has the 4560 dash files, and am I right in thinking that I can't use AID on an unmodded box? Any help guys would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance for your time and trouble.

It's the 5960 dash files you need, and they are definitely on AID, in Files\Dash\ms-c.zip. However, unless your PC has an IDE connector on the motherboard then you won't be able to hotswap. Also, for hotswapping you need Autobuilder v5.1, not AID.

Thanks for that Heimdall.
My PC is steam powered and therefore has the requisite IDE port.
I was going down the Xboxhdm route hopefully (which I managed to get a copy of), but I still can't find the 4560 dash files. I don't seem to have a folder labelled "files". Either I'm going blind or I have an incomplete download. I know that they existed on XBMC however I was unable to download a complete file. Is the file label obvious ie MS4560 or similar, or could the file contain a later version?
Sorry to ask such simplistic questions; I hate being so uninformed.
Many thanks.
FYI. I have just started the Autobuilder 5.1 download as you reccommended.
8hr download!!! Ouch!

Again:
- 5960, not 4560
- ms-c.zip
The Files folder is inside the Auto-Installer.Deluxe.v4.53.Xbox-Hq.iso, which you need to extract with Qwix.
The dash files definitely DON'T exist in the XBMC download.
Edit: If you're using xboxhdm 1.9 then you need TWO ide ports on your motherboard - one won't work. If you only have one IDE port then you need xboxhdm 2.2, or Autobuilder 5.1

Thanks Heimdall.
I'm sorry, my brain is totally fried! Can't think why I wrote 4560 when I actually meant to write 5960. Dyslexic fingers.
If it's in the Iso file then that would explain it as I haven't unzipped that yet.
I'll give it a go. Thanks.
Doh! Only one IDE port! Autobuilder it is then.
Thanks.

Just to be clear, if you are using Autobuilder then you don't need to extract the stock C files from AID, or from anywhere else, because they're included with Autobuilder, and it populates the xboxhdm folders automatically as it builds the xboxhdm iso.

Ok, no luck with autobuilder - displays "unable to find linux disc".Redownloaded and tried again.....same result. I have only one IDE connection although two ports (master and slave), but have both a SATA and IDE CD/DVD drive, so have tried both and with the ide drive in as many ways as I can think of, ie, master/slave settings, cable select etc.
Have tried the same with xboxhdm 1.9, with identical results; on one of the many forums or sites visited it was stated that 1.9 would run with both cd/dvd drive and Xbox hdd on the same ribbon, so I tried that too.
Xboxdm 2.2 fails boot, although USB booting is supported and enabled Tried another download with same results. Reformatted USB drive, and retried.....same result.
Downloaded xplorer 360, but it cannot find any fat x formatted drive.
Both the Bios and xp see the Xbox hard dirve but xp device manager states is unreadable, 0 memory with 0 bytes used or available, although both recognize it as a WD 8Gb drive!
Downloaded and tried winhex. which shows the Xbox Hdd but shows every sector as unreadable.
The Hdd spins up ok, no clicking or unusual noises. If the Hdd logic cct was at fault, could this be the cause, or would that show up on the Xbox as an error code?
I have now run out of ideas, save trying all my friends for an older PC running an AMD chip with 2 IDE ports.
Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks.

I think you should focus on getting xboxhdm or autobuilder to boot first. Just hookup the PC how it normally would be and see if you can get the programs to boot that way. If they do boot, try messing with the master/slave settings of the cd drive and the Xbox harddrive. Having the Xbox hard drive as master and the cd as slave usually seems to work best. _________________

Hello Dartht33bagger.
Both autobuilder and xboxhdm boot to the point where it requires me to input "xbrowser"or "xboxhd" if my memory serves me correctly.
When I enter either of these commands it returns with "unable to find Linux disc, insert disc and retry" or something similar. Surely it has booted from the disc in the first place to get to that point!
This is whilst booting from cd/dvd drive obviously.
By the way, I have tried connecting the xbox Hdd at different times during the boot up, along with the pause/break method.
By hook up the pc as it normally would be I presume you mean with the normal hdd connected and then try to access the program via the cd/dvd drive?
I'm sorry if it seems like I'm asking questions with obvious answers but I'm on a very steep learning curve here.
Thanks for your reply.

It sounds like your computers bios is not compatible with XboxHDM or autobuilder. You may be able to mess with your bios settings to get your current computer to work, but your best bet would be to use another computer if you can. _________________

I've already read that thread; I've read almost everything I can find on modding, restoring, updating etc. an Xbox.
I've tried playing with the BIOS settings, but to no avail.
I tend to agree with you that there seems to be an incompatibility with the PC's BIOS and it looks like my only option is to find an alternative PC.
Many thanks for your input. I will persevere.

Sorry - just reread the thread, and realised you'd already tried this!
