How can I go about accessing my xbox remotely? Like if I'm at my friends house and I want to transfer a file to/from my xbox at home.

It would be more safer for you to take your Xbox and a crossover net cable to your friends house and do it there more faster and safer than leaving Xbox open to the WWW
That's how i will do it.

Yeah, but I still want my brother to be able to play it while I'm gone. There's nothing on my xbox that I'm really concerned about anyone messing with and it's all backed up. So, even if someone did have a reason to access my xbox, I'm not too concerned about it. I don't see any reason someone would want to access my xbox anyway.

I've never attempted it but it sounds like it could be as easy as port forwarding say port 21 on your router to your xbox 1 ip address (192.168.0.2) or whatever.. Then you could access the xbox via the internet using your home ip address. _________________ HQ Network:

Ok, so I've changed the username and password for the xbox, and set up port forwarding. Now how do I figure out what the home ip address is?

Well... that seems really obvious now. I shouldv'e just googled it.
Anyhow, I think we're on the right track. I can connect to the xbox, but then get some kinda error when it tries to list.
Here's the log from FlashFXP.

Did you check the network settings on your Xbox? When I first set mine up, I was having the same problem because it was trying to use a static IP. I had to switch the network type on the Xbox to DHCP to allow the router to assign an IP address.. Of course, this would depend on your network.
Try pinging your Xbox. If you're using windows open a command prompt and type
ping followed by your xbox's ip address.
for example this is mine:
Code:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ping 10.0.0.9
Pinging 10.0.0.9 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 10.0.0.9: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.9: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.9: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 10.0.0.9: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Ping statistics for 10.0.0.9:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>
Now see what happens when I change the network type on my Xbox to static. (Which was the default.) Note the different IP address.
Code:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
Ping statistics for 192.168.0.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>
As you can see, I don't recieve a response from the Xbox, even though the Xbox says it is connected to the network.

If you set your XBOX IP to static you will need to assign DNS servers manually.. Have you assigned DNS servers when you set it to static? That's why its working when you use Dynamic.
Also, you need to set static so that the router can port forward PORT 21 to a specific IP ADDRESS (eg. your xbox 192.168.0.2)
if your router is assigning ip addresses in the range 10.0.0.x then just pick a random ip eg. 10.0.0.3 to assign to your xbox. And use the same DNS settings as your PC. _________________ HQ Network:

You cant. If you want to FTP from or to an XBOX it must be on the same network as the originator or destination XBOX or PC.
In plain english this means unless your XBOX and his XBOX are plugged into the same router YOU BE FUCKED lol

I don't believe you. I think I've actually figured out a way to do it.
I have set up my Xbox as a network drive on my PC. From looking around online, it seems possible to access network drives through a VPN. Now, I'm having a bit of trouble getting the VPN working because I've never used a VPN before. I'll basically be accessing my computer with the VPN, and then the computer will access the Xbox.
There's always a way.

The thing you are forgetting though is that even when setup as a network drive to transfer data requires the XBOX FTP server which is very limited. We are talking about tech from 2002. Sure PC tech has evolved, the base software on the XBOX has not. XBOX does not support http or sntp transfer and the chance of seeing somebody write new software to support what you are talking about is virtualy non existent

Right, I get that. That's why I'm not trying to access the Xbox from the 'net like I was originally planning. You see, there's always a work-around. And in this case it was a lot easier than I was making it. I simply made an account with LogMeIn.com which allows me to control my PC from the 'net. I simply log into my PC with LogMeIn and FTP into my Xbox as if I was at my desk. The xbox is making friendly with the PC because it's on the local network, and I'm doing everything from my buddy's house with LogMeIn.
Mission accomplished.
