Whats the error code and have you tryed a hotswap or xboxhdm?
I like to use chimp for hdd upgrades.
You can find tuts for all these ways in the tut or guides section.

It seems I am panicking a bit too early I am using xboxhdm by this way. Now I can't seem to lock the drive. I am getting a "disable automatic dectection on the primary IDE channel in your PC bios and reboot" message when I try to lock the drive.

So reboot you pc and when it gives the bios screen, push f2(its f2 on most pcs might not be on yours) and turn off the second ide in there and try again.

I have disable the auto feature on the primary ide channel and set it to user. I also did the same thing on the secondary channel. I even went so far as to disable the secondary drive on the primary and the second drive on the secondary channel and still I get the same error. I then decided to try CHIMP since I found a molex splitter in my cable collection (you would believe the amount of stuff in my basement). I followed the http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-260.html step by step and got and 07 error code. Did the research on the and found it to be a cable error. I reconnected my orignal drive to rule out the 'bad cable' theory, now I am trying th CHIMP process again. Is there anything I should be looking for. By the way I did consult the HDD locking guide before I purchased the drive.

Could've just been the dodgey cable causing you the probs, try the Chimp tut again with a new cable and you should be fine. If you need any help with the guide, just give us a shout, I wrote it! lol
Thanks for the quick response FinalCloud. but let me asking you an interesting question. Can I use xboxhdm to prep the drive and then use CHIMP to lock it? Would that even work?

Chimp is an app that runs from inside the dashboard and as such, the drive would need to be locked to fire it up in the first place. I would let Chimp both unlock and lock your drive for you, or do both with xboxhdm. It keeps it simpler if one app does the whole process, that way you avoid the dreaded "contact technical support" screen and error codes.
Thanks for the response. I am attempting the process again. I did it last night and everything looked ok. I saw the screen where it looked like things where hopping along fine. I have decided to try again after getting that error code. I unlocked the drive, disabled the security and scanned. However, when I get to the screen where it says 'Choose yes will wipe out and reformat this disk (/dev/hdb), BE WARNED', I choose yes and it just seems to hang. I do not hear any kind of drive activity. Any thoughts. By the way, I want to thank you for the assistance. This is an outstanting forum.

No probs man, we're here to help.
Depending on the size of the drive, the format/rebuild can take quite a long time. My 160Gb drive took almost 40 minutes to do! It might be worth baring with it for a little while, see if it is actually doing something.
I am using CHIMP 2.14 I think. You must be a prophet, because I left it running and came back about 30 min later and it seems to be doing its thing. I'll let you know how it comes out. Thanks again.

Error 7 is a lose or bad ide cable, make sure you push the ide cable all the way in the mobo hdd and disc drive.
If it still gives the error try swaping the ide cable.
Other then that im not sure of any other way to fix error 7.

edit - i also just read 07 can mean u havent set the hard drive to master, may that be the problem?? thats its still in slave ???
