Nice, looks like you got a 1.0 or 1.1 there.
Those are real nice to tsop.
I dont know man you went over most things it could be so i wold say its a weak or bad trace on the mobo.
You know the little copper lines all over the mobo.
yup, it's a v1.0 (got 2 of those, one with bad Thomson drive, and the one we're talking about, so those 2 XBoxes make 1 good XBox)
tested it out of the box,
at first no difference,
after few tries it now works normally!?
I got a power cord with box along it which has 2 buttons: green one: reset, red one: test,
after I pressed Reset the symptoms started to change (red one shuts power off, green one turns it back on and resets if pressed when on, it prevents shortcuts),
some spots on the mobo are sticky brownish, sometimes at condensor (=capacitor), but also other places where no condensor, a condensor is like a battery, could they become leaky? what would spills look like?
so I kept it on after it worked normally,
suddenly a beep and when I went to take a look, it was off,
and powerbutton did not work, had to use eject to turn it on,
plugging it in turned it on too,
so it's probably a component of the motherboard that causes these problems,
going to reassemble it and leave it at that (at least now it doesn't turn off when I press eject),
it can still be of use, but stability might not be so good,
and probably not safe to leave it on unguarded...
if anyone has a clue, let me know
take care!

if your worried about it shorting to the case just pull out the mettle shielding it will keep it cooler and remove any chances of the mobo shorting across the case as for the cpu fan you can just tap it in to the case fan and thin it will be controlled by the ux dash and the xbmc dash and the power on off you sed with the dvd and hdd removed it worked but when you put thim in it didn't maybe its the dvd drive cus the eject is routed thru it try putting the dvd of the good xbox in and see if that works _________________

glad to see ur getting some where with this box _________________
I've tried mobo outside the box, no difference, so that's not the cause,
tried both dvd-drives, also nothing to do with it,
I've put XBMC dash on it,
I always set temperature control to 45C,
I noticed that the fan got louder, the GPU was at 48C while the only thing that was just done was install softmod XBMC dash,
so I've put Arctic Silver coolpaste on for both CPU & GPU,
now it's cooled a hell of a lot better
then I've put the Xbox back together,
when I plugged power in it powered on automatically,
did weird again, but after it's been on some time it works now normally,
all buttons do what they supposed to do, and has not fallen out so far,
so I guess I'm good now

you mean put GPU fan in case-fan connection and case-fan in GPU fan connection? I'm gonna check that out tomorow,
I have an in between cable with resister in it to slow down a case fan, but don't have it around here... as soon as I have it I'm going to put that in for GPU fan, should slow it down somewhat, only bad thing is that that resistor generates heat, but I should also have a cable that splits up into 2 slow connections and 2 fast (came with a Zalman GPU cooler), but don't have it here either.... crap
will replace the hard disk too, both those v1.0 Xboxes from 2002 have quite the noisy hard disks (they become noisy (like a rhythmic zooming) over the years right? it's also a sign that they're going to crash sooner or later I think, once had a hdd that crashed, after I replaced it my pc got sooo much more silent!)
I've put a Zalman Fan Mate 2 in both Xboxes v1.0 for the GPU cooler,
at lowest speed you can hardly hear them (the cooling is actually quite the same too) and I've got the controller unit at the outside, so I can adjust the speed if wanted, pretty sweeeet
that Xbox works fine now, to get it started I just have to keep the power button pressed and then press eject button, then it powers on, once it's on a while, all buttons work fine as they should, strange, but stable
regards!

Sounds as though the xboxes control pannel in the front is weird. _________________

Or that. Could be either of them. It has something to do with the control panel/traces that go into the mobo. _________________

I think i just found your true fix man and it wold seem that the traces are at the root of the prob.
Symptoms that were fixed:
1) Only red LED - for well over a year the power/status LED has only been able to light in red. We now have Green and Orange, yay!
2) Power button wasn't working to turn unit on, did work to turn it off (usually).
3) Automatically powered up when first plugged in.
4) Would not shut down via XBMC shutdown menu - simply rebooted.
mine does all those things except for the last one (noticed that only red light worked just yesterday), but when it's been on a while everything works normal (except for the red light), the current probably finds a better way when on a while,
think I'm gonna throw in those little silica gel bags (got 2 of those with new hdd, must be lying around here somewhere...) in every Xbox I open up, so that all moisture is sucked up by the silica and corrosion is inhibited !?
thanks again for this awesome find Wes ,
you're the best!
take care
