Post subject: Dry solder joint?

A buddy brought me his semi-faulty attempt at an X3 mod yesterday, and I have to admit that I'm stumped for an answer. It's an X3CE on a 1.6a board with a seemingly clean install. It seems to work perfectly sometimes--he's got the X3 bios installed (hasn't installed AID yet because he wanted to figure out the problem first)--other times, it only boots to the MS bios, and the chip doesn't even light up, as though it's getting no power or has become unseated. I've inspected the board with a magnifying glass for solder splashes or burns and found nothing; I've provided the same service for the solder joints and they seem clean. After a bit of tinkering, I discovered that the chip always works when the lid is off, or when the lid is on but the screws aren't tightened. When the screws are tightened, there's a 50/50 chance that the chip won't work.

After a bit more fumbling, I realized that the IDE cable folds under the DVD drive and right over the X3 chip, lightly pressing upon it...once the chip quits working, it usually takes reseating it on the pins to get it working again, which made me suspect the cable in the first place. Guessing that the problem might be a dry solder joint, I fired up my iron and touched up all of the soldering points, but that hasn't helped. So far, the only thing that has worked is folding the IDE cable out of the way, but I'm worried that a minor jolt to the boxsuch as might occur when jerking a controller during gameplay will disengage the chip again. Any suggestions?

a v1.6 xbox with a x3 chip needs a very very fast tap of power button to enable chip
with the ide cable out of the road there sould be no prolbem as long as you have chip on the pins all the way down
you should see the pins at the top of chip not all the way but so you see top thuo holes of chip

The trouble isn't that the chip isn't enabled, it's that it has no power whatsoever (the X logo on the switch panel LED isn't red as though the chip was disabled, it is black as though the chip was completely without power). I've built several X3's, one a personal 1.6 X3CE, and haven't had trouble like this, although I'll admit that with my first build I did have to reopen my box to push the chip all the way down Embarassed

Yes to the pin question. As for the 5v wire, I have both inspected and resoldered it on the board and reattached it at its connection to the chip, but I haven't got a voltimeter make sure it's pulling a constant stream of power. Think I should try an alternate 5v source?
