How To Remove The Stock Jewel And add Clear OnePublished by Jeff McCloy on 0000-00-00 Category: Case Mods | Page Views: 8,606
Here is how you will apply this jewel. First, tools and items you will need that you will need. (besides the basics to open the machine)
You will notice the little half circles of velcro that are on the ring. This is how you are going to adhere the ring to the underside of the case top. You will need to purchase some velco rings from any craft store. I got those from Wal-Mart. I didn't have any of the other side left. I think they cost me about $2.00
You will need a butter knife, thin as possible.
Cotton balls, or cotton pads.
Acetone, paint thinner, gasoline, anything to take paint off of the jewel that you are removing.
Hole Saw. This is a round tool that fits on your drill so you can cut perfect holes in items. Just like used for cutting door knob holes in doors. Get one that is 2.5 inches.
Glue gun and glue sticks.
Blow Dryer.
Getting the Jewel Off.
Once you have your case top off, flip it upside down. You'll notice the metal RF Shield is in the way, get a flat head screwdriver and bend back the little clips that are holding it onto the Posts. Then, you can easily pry it off.
Now, grab a blow dryer and heat up the underside of the case where the jewel sits. Heat it up good. Move it around, don't hold in one spot or you may warp the case. It will take a lot, but still can happen. You are going to heat it up for about 5 minutes or so.
Once it's heated up pretty good, try prying gently with the butter knife. Be sure not to chip the jewel. Grab the knife at the very tip and hold it tight. Try to push in a down and inward motion. The glue under the jewel is thin at the sides. Start next to the X in the word Xbox and push toward the middle of the jewel.
You can also use dental floss to remove the jewel if you wish, and some people use the freezer method. Whatevery you use, just take your time. It will come off.
Once you are able to get the knife pushed about 1/2 inch into the underside of the jewel, move it back and forth until the jewel is completely off.
You will have a lot of black gunk/adhesive left on the backside of the jewel.
Take your jewel and put in the freezer for an hour or so. This will enable you to scrape off the remaining glue. As the glue freezes it becomes brittle and should come off easily. If not, I have used Oven Cleaner to weaken the black gunk/adhesive.
To clear the jewel, you can use acetone, gas, pain thinner, just whatever you use, use it sparingly. Take a few wipes then rinse with water. Acetone can harm acrylic if left on too long. That's why I rinse. When I used paint thinner it came off the easiest. Gas didn't do too poorly either. This is the toughest part of the mod. Getting that darn jewel clear.
Now, get your drill and a regular drill bit an drill a hole in the center of the case. This will act as a guide for the hole saw.
Now, put the hole saw on your drill and drill your larger hole.
Once you are finished cutting hole, scrape off any melted plastic. You want your surface around the hole to be smooth.
Now, you glue your cleared jewel in place. Use the glue sparingly on the very edge of the lip of the hole You will see exactly how much room the jewel clings too. Put the jewel down first so you get an idea of where to put the glue. Just put enough down to make the jewel stick, and not so much so you can see tons of glue. Remember, the ring is clear so you will see glue. This is why I like the expensive clear jewels that have a lip on them. These just stick down insde the hole nicely leaving no evidence of glue.
Once the jewel is on and dry, now flip case top over and put your little velcro circles down so you can stick the jewel ring to it. Stick your ring on and now put back together....viola!
I used a piano black jewel ring. It hides the glue better, but isn't as bright as the clear...obviously.
