Often compared to or against NHL06 from EA Sports, it has a whole different feel.
I dig NHL06 but it feels almost stuffy under the weight of it's EA Sports authority where NHL 2K6.
The graphics aren't quite as impressive and yet if there was no NHL06 exisiting then one would say wow. The reflections off the ice, the sounds of the skates, the crowd roars and the music make it a really enjoyable game to play.
Much like NHL 06 there are lots of options that you can do that I havent had the chance to use them all. But its all here, tournaments, franchise mode, party modes, skills competitions, online leagues; not to mention the host of unlockable classic teams, game modes, and other extras. Hockey games usually must be tweaked to a player's preference and NHL 2K6 provide more options than the competition.
One of the things I like is the ProControl Passing that allows you have total puck control. I found controlling who got the puck during a rush easier with this game than NHL06 and honestly more fun. The game is fast paced and the songs played in the arena after icing or offsides is much more what one would hear in the arena. I got a real kick out of it and it lends to the feel of "being there".
On-The-Fly Coaching allows you to make adjustments to your style of play, both offensively and defensively, during the game, thus “on-the-fly”.
The best part was how much better the Enforcer System is in this game than in NHL06. I was landing some good shots in NHL06 but even better ones here. Not only could I make the player I was controlling hit, but I could instruct other players to hit and how hard. The idea behind this is using their physical play to take the top players from the opposition off their game. And in this game, you can intimidate the players on the other team by being rough.
Another real positive is that it doesnt carry the financial weight of NHL06 in that instead of around $45+ it is selling for around $20.
Once again for hocky fans, Id say this is a must have!
