you can really lol now how do you check the ide cable i unplug the dvd drive and plug that to the hard drive and got a code 12

sorry wes but this is so frustrating all the ide are all the way in but it still stops at the ms screen and it starts to boot the disc then it stops

Do you have the OG hdd to see if it can launch that?

no the friend i got the xbox from sold it when he upgraded to bigger hd all i have is the backup disc when he upgraded to the bigger hd well i guess i sol on the xbox good luck on the vip wes but I guess Im out for today i guess I go back to ps2

What does the backup CD have on it? If it as a file called eeprom.bin your golden. The eeprom.bin is the code to lock the hdd to the motherboard. You can use it with xboxhdm 1.9 to build a new hdd. It does sound like your harddrive is dead, so you'll need a new one. Ive had the same thing happen to me and my V1.6......
I set my HDD Jumper to Master..
Changed my IDE Ribbon and used a can of air on the plug-ins...
Solved the problem.....
Microsoft used a crappy IDE ribbon in the V1.6, also everything else in the V1.6 is crappy...Wish I had a V1.0....oh well..

Also Check to see if the pins are loose, broke, or anything.....
Now on a side note, to tell if your hdd is going out. put your ear to it and listen for a clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk,..... _________________
