Hi everybody,
Austin,TX here. I am really new to the xbox scene. In fact I just bought 1 about 3 weeks ago. I recently bought the Xenium mod chip but I have not installed it yet. I have been reading web page after web page and tutorial after tutorial about modding the xbox. However, I have questions that I have not seen answered. One question I have is will an Xbox without the mod chip and everything original as purchased boot up a CDRW with the Slayer 2.5 iso image? If not, is there any way of testing whether the CDRW was burned properly? I opened up my Xbox already and it came with a Samsung DVD 605d or something...cant remember the exact number. Also I cant seem to find a CLEAR tutorial on how to install a bigger hard drive. I have an 80 gig but I am still not sure on how to do this. I have seen a couple of tutorials that list 3 different ways I think and then at the end it says that they have not tried it. I dont want to screw up my Xbox. So, if someone can point me to a CLEAR step by step tutorial on how to do this I would really appreciate it. Oh, I almost forgot...I am using a plextor 24/10/40A with Verbatim 4X-10X CDRWs. If I have to buy a DVD burner I am probably going to get the New one from Plextor...that is if I have too though.
Thanks for all replys,
rogerg

Nope. A standard (retail) Xbox wont boot anything..!!
A modchip when enabled bybasses the onboard (motherboard) bios of your xbox. It stores a hacked version of a bios in the modchip that allows you to boot BACKUPS and UNSIGNED CODE. e.g. ISO GAMES, EMULATORS, MEDIA PLAYERS etc.
Please remember:
when you purchase your modchip it only comes with a LEGAL bios called a 'cromwell' bios.. This CROMWELL BIOS is only for booting LINUX ON YOUR XBOX.. So in otherwords, you will have to flash your modchip with a hacked bios before it will boot backups and other apps.

yup, with a modded xbox..! Or a xbox that has the 007 game save hack (which i dont support).. It will boot if its ok..

You lucky bugger.. The Samsung DVD Drive allows you to burn to CDR (some brands).. My drive the Thompson DVD Drive only allows some CDRW media to work. Thats good news already!

this is the easiest..
Once your modchip is installed and playing backups etc then move on to upgrading your hard drive.
1. Download Slayer's auto installer
2. Burn it to DVD-R or CDR/CDRW
3. Open your xbox
4. Remove your Xbox Hard Drive (Retail Hard Drive)
5. Match the settings on your new 80gb hard drive with the jumpers.
e.g. primary, slave, master
6. Now install your new HARD DRIVE into your xbox and attach all the cables like normal.
7. Put your xbox back together.
8. Turn it on and boot the DVD-R/CDR/CDRW of Slayer's.
9. Choose Format and Partition New Large HD from the menu..
(im cant say exactly as im not infront of my xbox but its pretty self explainatory once slayers has booted to the menu).
10. When its done it will reboot..
OK. You can choose to format and install anything really just have a browse through the options..
11. Last thing.
12. Boot Slayers Auto Installer again
13. Choose load 'ConfigMagic'
14. Lock the Hard Drive.
Thats it.. Your NEW HARD DRIVE will boot just like the old one. heheh
If you dont lock your hard drive you will get a error when your modchip is turned off.. So just lock it
* Keep hold of your old HARD DRIVE incase the new one dies in the arse..

youll be right.. That 80gb hard drive will keep you busy and youll have plenty of space to use..

OK, I installed the Xenium Mod chip correctly first try !!! YEAH!!! Booted up the Xenium OS v1.0, configured the bios banks as 4x 256K, flashed bank 1 with X2 4973. It boots the bios correctly !! Thanks again forahobby. My VIP membership has already paid itself off thanks to your help! . Now, I just have to install the new hard drive. I am going to try the Slayer v2.5 iso again, hopefully it works.
Thanks,
