Hi all,

After the fiasco and death of my soft-modded 1.6 Xbox (click here for that topic) I went out and purchased a 1.4 Xbox just so I can play my games.

This means that I now have 2 normal consoles at home. A v1.4 and a dead v1.6.

Please note, that when I say "dead" I mean essentially that - Flashing red and green xbox icon and a screen saying to call customer support. Nothing works - discs, no dash, nothing. If you need more detail as to how that happened, please click the link above.

After much thought, I decided to try the hardmod route.

So the following questions arise, as I know nothing of modchips and digging through the tutorials on this site gets really confusing due to some being outdated and whatnot.

1. Which xbox is easier to mod, but which is better?
Or, would it be better to mix and match the parts (hdd, disc drive, etc)?

-I would prefer to work on the 1.6 since the 1.4 is in working condition, but am willing to work on that if it is easier to mod.

2. Which modchip is best overall, simple to install AND easy to find for purchase? If installed - will it be able to get the 1.6 with the messed up hdd and missing eprom working again, or is that a lost cause?

-Note; I do not have a PC for a hotswap - I only have access to laptops. Plus I do not know anyone with a modded xbox.

3. If you say which modchip will work the best, is there a good and clear tutorial with pictures, instead of just a "figure it out" tutorial?

4. What happens after the installation of a chip? What do I do?

Thanks all.

Check your other topic for my response.

As for this one:

1. I would TSOP the 1.4 and put a chip in the 1.6. A TSOP will give you a modded bios without a chip, and the 1.6 will also have a modded bios (you can't TSOP a 1.6).

2. Best overall is the X3 CE, I have had one for 3 years and I love it. The other chip I have is a HyperX, and that thing is terrible.

3. Below I have attached the guide that I used to install my X3 CE back in 2007.

4. After you install the chip, you will need to flash it with a bios. If you get the X3 CE, you will need the x3_3094 bios. If you go with anything else you'll want to use the X2_5035 bios.

When you say TSOP without a chip do you mean setting up a softmod as via SplinterCell?

No, totally different process. You solder some points on the board to allow you to flash the bios chip that comes with the xbox. You erase the stock bios from M$ and replace it with one of yours. Since there is no more xbox live, there is really no reason not to do this on a 1.0-1.5 xbox anymore.

Here is the TSOP tut:http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/TSOP_flashing_HOWTO
