hi,
im evilalex and in new here and i have e some questions.
i have a xbox that some one softmodded for me few years ago but it stil has the original 8GB harddrive.
now i want to replace it for a 40GB drive since i have two of them that i dont use.
im thinking to use xboxhdm.

one thing that not clear to me, if i lock this HDD whit the cd can unlock it whit the same cd later ? (the eeprom.bin is on the cd)
also when i have made a new HDD for the xbox and it works does the original 8GB disk still work if i put it back in?
i also took a look at the list whit harddrives on this site and the new harddrive that wil be a maxtor isnt in the list.
my harddrive: Diamondmax plus 8 6E040L0510223
i found one thats close but isnt the same Diamondmax plus 8 6E040L0510233
for that one it says not lockable,
i gues i should juts try it whit this disk
i already made a cd whit xboxhdm the only thing i have to do is make the HDD and put it in the xbox

Welcome to the HQ, we hope you enjoy this and the many HQ sites.
1) If your HDM disk locked it then yes it can unlock it.
2) yes the old HDD will still work just fine.
3) i can find no sites that say that HDD will work so just keep that in mind if you try any way.
If you use CHIMP to upgrade the HDD i think you will find it a much simpler task as long as the xbox is not a ver. 1.6

thanks for the welcome and the info,
since im some one who just wants to try something sometimes i tryd to make the hd.
there is only one weird thing: some how it loads the original ms dash and not the softmod .
that i get the msdash tels me that the new harddrive work only the mod doesnt can this stil have something to do with the harddrive ?
i dont know if its usefull but this is the mod that the guy installed back then:

after i used ndure evrything works only with an other mod (unleashX) but thats not realy a big problem
is there a way to gange the mod to evolutionx or is it only posible with a fresh mod?
i got a AID 4.40 dvd

Just pop in AID and use the softmod dash install section and install the evox dash to the drive ndure keeps the dash, E drive i think.

i have tryd this but i got an error during installation and when i rebooted it loaded the ms dash again so i had to rebuild the hhd again
now i have only one problem,
when i try to start a game it shows the introduction movie from that game but when it shows the screen that its loading it doensnt continue and stays at that screen, doesnt matter if it loads from dvd or hdd ( E: or F: ).
this happend before and after i had to rebuild the hdd
has any one an idea what the problem could be ?
im still running unleash.
all the apps like dvd2xbox and the media center work just fine

i just saw this post http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/postt24578.html and did what it said and now the game runs fine even after restarting the game and turning off the xbox it stil works
i now go try it whit an other game that didnt work

i wanted to say thanks for the help/info
my xbox stil runs like it should and all games run fine
also i had to update xbmc couse the old one got corupted and didnt wanted to play movies/pics/music.
now i have updated it and this runs fine to,

Good to hear you got it running smooth man, i spent last night reinstalling my friends XBMC for the same prob.
Thank God they still update XBMC right.

the new xbmc looks mutch better compared whit the one i had witch was installed 2 years ago,i never updated it until now.
didnt know how to update it until i saw the link to the tutorial in your signature

this week i decided to go back to evox only couldnt do it whit the aid disk so i ordered splinter cell and today got it
i downloaded the the latest ms dash so i can make a hdm disk whit it to go back to retail.
also i puted the files needed to run the softmod on it becouse i dont have a memory card (why using memory card if u can store on the harddrive whas my idea )
reason to do this: i dont like the look if unleashx and evox has some cool skins
this way i also have a nice clean harddrive with out all the trash on it from traying to instrall evox with aid manny times.

OK so after figuring out a little about how these hard drives locking worked I decided instead to simply build a replacement 80gig drive instead of going too far with my existing working HDD. So here was what I did that so far has worked out well for me.
Found a working WD 80gig which showed as lockable. Downloaded the latest xboxhdm and followed the steps. Used FTP to copy my old C: and E: contents to my PC from my old modded Xbox which hadnt had too much done to it yet besides the Ndure Sid 5.0 installed and had copied XBMC to the APPS folder and thats all.
Noticed inside the BACKUP folder on E: was a copy of my entire MSFT fresh C: drive and actually used that to build the ISO image instead. Wrote the ISO to CD. Now comes the headaches I snagged on.
First thing was can't use USB really. Had to use an old computer which had IDE CD reader and IDE (not SATA type drives). Newer machines like mine I would normally use an adapter to plug old IDE drives into a USB because all my drives are SATA but the xboxhdm CD didnt like that system and worked best on the old system.
Used the modded C: files the 1st time. Careful to always copy the E:\eeprom folder because the xboxhdm system uses that to lock unlock the drive. Used option 1 to get it to burn the whole 80 gig drive out as an xbox HD but wouldnt boot. Figured out this was probably because it wasnt locked yet, so put it back on old PC and chose option 3 instead of option 1 and went in to do the lockHD -a command and voila locked HD. Still wont boot. That was when I figured out about the backup in E:\backups and burned another iso with the fresh MSFT image for C: and the eeprom folder of course and now to unlock the locked drive.
Tricky here once the thing is locked its now a fickle hosed piece of hardware - so chose boot to option 3 and unlock it and before rebooting remove the IDE cable leaving it powered up - what they called the hotswap trick. After reboot wait for menu and before choosing option 1 plug IDE cable back in. Leaving IDE cable pluggin in during bios boot RELOCKS the disk. Yeah its a really fubar scheme by hardware makers to make drives secure for retentive companies that are worried anyone might ever actually use THEIR hardware for anything other than what they PAID for without the sellers permission. Imagine if Ford said you could only use their vehicle to drive to the Kroger and back and employed such schemes...
OK so ran option 1 on the hotswap unlocked 80 gig and now with fresh Xbox image from my previously (happy I did that) FTP's copy of my modded 20 gig found in my Edrive\backup\cdrive folder voila fresh Xbox image burned to disk. Slap drive back on xbox and it autorelocks itself of course and booted up like a store bought 80 gig xbox.
Of course now the usual work to boot 007/mechassault whatnot and resoftmod the thing to get it all FTP back over to where I can load XBMC or emulators and stuff again.
For those that are not aware of how this is done, just take the http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/xemus/xbox/xemus.htm from this list and extract most of those to the E:\ememulators folder on E: (or maybe F and take XBMC and extract to the E:\apps and so forth.
Then your softmod menu will allow you to launch those and have fun. Hope this helps someone. Oh yeah be sure to store the eeprom folder from E: after any initial softmod once you gain access via FTP because that info is very important to be able to unlock future harddrives on that xbox. Each xbox will have its own password designed to keep you from doing everything that makes an old xbox worth messing with. Cheers
