Hi all,
I have been doing softmods for a while now. I have done about 8 or so xbox's ver 1.0-1.6 and now I am trying to figure out how I did something that was a mistake at the time.
What happened was I was using xboxhdm 1.9 and coming up with a new install disk. I was setting up the old style dual boot with xbox media center with drive closed and software installer deluxe with drive open (udata). I did a few different copies to the hard drive using the process of elimination to figure out what everything did on the c drive to get it to boot.
What I did one of the times was get the xbox to boot with no DVD Drive attached. I noticed this because this is how I get the system to unlock the hard drive best for a hotswap. Now I know thats not supposed to be possible with a softmod but I swear I did it and now I want to know how I did it so i can do it again?
Do any of you have an idea of how I did this? Is it possibly just a fluke and maybe some kind of bug.
On another attempt. I was able to get my system to ignore xbox games in the drive and boot to the dashboard. I believe that is the same trick as booting the xbox without a dvd drive attached but I'm not sure.
I understand that the udata folder is where the xbox stores some of the boot data for the xbox. Can someone explain the boot process of the xbox to me. What does it look at first? The udata/tdata folder or does it look at c first and then jump to the udata folder?
I hope someone can unravel this mystery. Thanks

Well the xbox looks for booting up things in this order:
1. Xbox dvd drive, if a game is in the drive then it will start it.
2. If you the dvd drive is empty it goes to the C:\ and looks for the msdash.xbe.
Thats as much as I know. I never knew that the xbox even looked in the udata folder. I know it looks in the caches though for data. _________________

i currently have a softmod xbox and i dont have a dvd drive, i took a thomspson drive which was duff and took the pci card out brutally (the board with the ide and power connections, i think it makes my xbox think the dvd drive is open in xbmc it always says close dvd drive on the 360 dashboard, the only thing i can think it might be is if the dual boot installed in a funny way when u press eject to boot the soft mod it boots the dash thinking the dvd drive is just open and not there, but not to damp ur hopes i do think t might be a fluke but trial and error it again and see if u can get it to do it

Damn see I knew i did it. What was so cool about it is it would just ignore the drive up until you got all the way into XBMC and then I could use it if I had it connected it at that time or even connected it then if I remember correctly. I never had the power disconnected only the IDE cable but never got an error for no DVD attached (21 I believe). Can you tell me the structure of your C drive? That is what is causing it. Its like you have part of the MS stuff there and part softmod that does it I think.
Tell me exactly what is in what folders and what the sizes are also what softmod you have installed? If I can get your structure and memic it exactly it should work or maybe if you can zip up the whole thing and post it somewhere I can get it to work. The other thing that matters is I know it also depends on what you put on the drive first. MS stuff has to come second to softmod otherwise somehow the MS crap will take over at boot.

my mod is a softmod 3.1 splinter cell explot, with aid 4.1 160gb hard drive, my i personally havent touched the info on c:/ very much because it contains the ms dashboard, if u had the power cable attached it might not need the ide cable plugged will check but i really dont think its entirely possible to do a complete dvd ffree softmod.

Well I hate when games read and load when i forgot them in the drive so actually i dont want a completely dvd free system but knowing how yours is setup can help me get that far at least. Do you have IM? PM me your info and I should be able to mimic what you did. THANKS
