I think I may have found the right forum finally.
I'm trying to get some input on the Softmod tutorial found here: http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-183.html That tutorial is for a version 2.0 of the SID, correct? So should I be using that version when I *attempt* a softmod, or should I be using the new version 5.0 I see is released?
I'd also like to know what exactly is installed with this. I think I understand Evox and UnleashX as modded dashboards, but what are the "emulators", "virtual c: drives" and other things that get installed with the softmod? Do i need these things? Can I choose to install them or not? (I would be using a default HD, so available space will be an issue) What is the difference between dashboards such as Evox / UnleashX / and this one called Avalaunch I keep reading?? Do they all do the same thing? What dashboard is recommended for a n00b like me... simple to use and will let me play burned/copied game discs and save these to the HD??
Thanks in advance! I appreciate any input.

Now evox and unleash are good dashes to use for a noob ava is good too, sid wont install the emulaters for you so youll have room to add dashes to try out till you find what you like.
The softmod lets you play game backups and put games on the hdd but if your useing the stock hdd you wont get but 1 or 2 games on there.
Hope this helps get you started let me know if i can do anything more for you man.

Yes the tuts for SID. If I were you I'd get AID it's got SID on there and is updated all the time. For your other questions all dashboards do pretty much the same thing Avalaunch is prolly the more complicated one, EvoX is pretty much outdated, and UnleashX is prolly the more advanced of the three in terms of what all it can do. The virtual C: is a step in the softmodding process and you have to do it. It just stores all the vital things away to keep em safe. Emulators don't have to be installed but if you wanna play NES,SNES,N64 games etc.. you need em. A modded Xbpx itself plays the burnt games it doesn't matter which you use but for a noob I recomend Xbox Media Center which is included in Auto Installer Deluxe but not sure about SID. Hope this helps, just post any other questions and I'll get back to you. _________________

Cool wasn't sure I've never tried SID b4 and I wasn't sure. O and for your main question this tuts fine just follow all the steps. After you mod just stick the AID disk in and install all the extras you want. Also theres an option to format the F:\ drive if you do it it'll unlock two GB's of hidden memory on the HDD. _________________

Great guys! Thanks for the response. I will download the AutoInstaller (version 4.0 I assume) and check out the softmod 5.0 from that. I just wanted to make sure that the installation tutorial for 2.0 is the same as for 5.0... but just a different version of the installer.

I'm thinking now that it would be cool to play emulated games as well. I'm kind of confused now: should I be modding my XBox with a Softmod Installer, or the Auto Installer? All the tutorials I read are in regards to SID, so what would I use the AID for?

Sid installer is built in to the save exploit and that softmods the xbox, you can then use aid to add dashes apps and emus.

My bad I meant get AID since SID is included on the disk and you just gotta pull it off there and AID is always updated and has all the extra stuff you need. _________________

Ah! Got it. Thanks guys, I'm just in the process of getting a modded Xbox memory card right now. Then I'll look for AID.... is there any place I can get the lastest version of AID without using torrents? I actually have never used a torrent client in my life. Is there an FTP site with it anywhere?
>EDIT<
Also, the AID downloads section has two versions... one full and one lite. It says the lite version fits on a 650mb CD and "doesnt need to use addon packs". What does this mean?... this addon packs? Should I use the full version or the lite version?
Thx.
