I am a newbie as far as xbox repair. My xbox is one of the first one's sold and it has lasted until yesterday when during a game, the system froze up. I tried to turn it on but it flashes green a few times, then flashes red/green for ever as long as it is on. Also, it makes a single little "beep" sound from inside the system when I first turn it on. I pounded it with my fist a few times but nothing. Embarassed I took the cover off and peeked inside, but I don't know what to look for. Can anybody help me troubleshoot.

Is the box modded or is it stock?

The red/green flashing is normally associated with bad/dodgy wiring, an out of date BIOS, a bad chip or bad image.

Judging by the way you've described it though, I'm guessing you've put a mod chip in, am I right? The most frequent cause for the error is:
Tries To Boot Three Times and then starts flashing red and green. Also Known as "Christmas Lights" Failed mod chip install, and broken traces on the motherboard.

You're going to have to look at resoldering some of the traces as they may be damaged or loose.

It will also flash red and green when it errors out. What is on the TV once it tries to boot? Does it say anything?

Nothing will come on the TV when it flashes red/green, it'll remain blank. He said it flashes green three times before it flashes red/green, indicating the problem I've listed.

Check out my new tutorial/info on the flashing lights and what they mean:

It does not display any vidio or audio when I power it up. I did take everything apart including pulling the motherboard out. I inspected the heck out of the motherboard and all traces appeared to be fine on both sides of it. Now, I have 2 broken xbox's. My brother gave me his to use for parts. I put my drive and my dvd rom into his motherboard and now I do get an error code of 06 on the TV. I saw that it meant that the HDD was unable to unlock. I don't know if this is fixable. Maybe I will just use the other hard drive and dump mine as much as I would hate to since it has all my own media. I think I am making progress. Thanks for your replies.

If you can solder then you can switch the eeprom chip from your old mobo and then you can use your hdd.

I don't think you said if it was chipped or softmodded....something as simple as your bios may have become corrupt and a new one would need to be loaded on the chip....i wouldnt jump to throwing your hdd away just yet.

I can solder. What does the eepon chip look like? Is it easily identifyable? I now have a working xbox but without my own hdd. I would like to try to install the chip on the other mobo so that I have my own hdd, but I don't want to mess up and ruin both xbox mother boards. Is there another way? What is that mini circuit board that plugs into the mother board?
