hey guys, im new to the forums here, but have been messing around with softmods for the past year or so, anyway my question is that since I will be getting a xbox 360 soon hopefully, I'm wondering how I might go about installing linux to my xbox natively and run a dedicated server off it. I have a softmod, evox dash, and a 1.6(c?) xbox. I am willing to make it so my xbox cannot play xbox games anymore, and am open to any suggestions on how I should go about doing this.
thanks in advance.

Are you familar with any particular Linux Distro? I know off the top of my head that 3 distros have been ported to the xbox, Ubuntu, Gentoo, and DSL. If you have any dealings with any of those 3 it might be the best choice to go with the one you have expierence with.
Also if you have any history with setting up a Dedicated server on linux, it's really no different with xbox linux, you just might have to use a vnc connection to log in and manipulate the xbox a little easier than by using the controller. _________________

I'm familiar with Slax and PCLinuxOS, two non ported distros of linux. Also, the problem I run into is how do you install Xubuntu or XDSL to your actually harddrive natively? because without this, it is very difficult to install the packages, as you would have to embed them somehow in the iso file... I have a stock harddive so I may run into problems with that also. Any links to sites with a how to on how to insall a putty/vnc-able distro natively to a 1.6c stock harddrive would be greatly appreciated. Right now i'm having bad luck getting to the graphic environment because i'm using component HD cables, but i'll probabl have better luck wth the standard RCA inputs... does anyone know if i had a usb keyboard if i could force out of the graphical desktop to command line with a simple control alt f7/f8/esc ?
thanks!

Well, unless you install a modchip you can't really have a "native" install (That is, an install without xbox files on the HDD that isn't emulating a filesystem). With a chip (Or a TSOP flash, though you have a 1.6 so you can't do that), you can have cromwell flashed, and you can use that to directly boot to linux. I personally like Xebian, though GentooX is nice if you don't mind a lot of compiling time (you need to recompile the kernel with pretty much every update, even if it's minor! (And that takes a while on an xbox, esp. due to it's limited 64MB ram)).
They're both set up out of the box with VNC and SSH services running, so that's a plus _________________ OTB Mods.com
