My friend's Xbox has something wrong with the hard drive. It will power up and say something like, "Your xbox needs service" and list an error number. Is there any way to get the unlock code and place it on a new hard drive or copy the current hard drive so that he can get his xbox working. We thought that possibly trying to ghost the hard drive would work but found out that it doesn't. Bottom line: What can be done to an non-modded Xbox that has a faulty hard drive? Thanks.

A lot can be done to an unmodded xbox. That's how all modded xboxes begin. What's the error #? That's real important. Perhaps we can rescue the xbox and perhaps softmod it? Just a thought. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Ah but then we are assuming that the drive is the issue when without the error code, it might simply be a dashboard issue or something like that.
Just because a cars engine is working hard, doesn't mean the engine is going out. It may be that the tires just need to be inflated properly, ya see? _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Thanks a lot guys. You're both a great help. I'll have to ask my friend what the error message was. All I know, was that when we powered it (the hard drive)up on his box, nothing came on. But when we put it in another, older box, the error message came on. Thanks again.

What I was trying to say was that we put the defective hard drive in a different Xbox. Now that I actually think about it, it's no wonder it produced an error. I'll have to try and power it up again, in its original state and see what happens. I'll keep you updated. Thanks again.

Why yes Virginia, there can indeed be issues with an unmodded xbox and it's dashboard. Thanks for asking, in black font no less. I had to highlight the post just to read it. _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

I just powered up my friend's Xbox and it didn't even display anything. It sounded like the hard drive tried 3 times to start up and then the LED started flashing green and red. The DVD drive wouldn't even open. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ummm thats a problem, thats what we call christmas lights.
Green/Red Flashing :
Problem: The Xbox will restart twice, and then flash red and green. This is known as the FRAG and can be caused by many reasons. Typically when you receive this error you willnot have any video. Possible reasons you may get this is a bad bios image, a bad bioschip, the Nvidia MCPX chip is damaged, broken/damaged traces or solder splashes on the mother board.
Fix: If you were doing any kind of soldering work (adding a Modchip or other type of mod) on or around your motherboard, make sure there are no solder splashes or that thereare not solder bridges connecting any traces. If there are, desolder them. If you havenot done any kind of modding to the unit, then its likely to be caused from a bad tsopimage, or a bad chip. Try installing a Modchip to see if you can get the unit to boot.
If the Xbox still gives a FRAG then it means another major component is bad and the motherboard needs to be replaced. _________________

I have found that if you try to boot a computer with a HDD that is going out, it will work once in a while.
If you have the softmod files on a memcard and the game that goes with it, sit there for a few minutes (20 or so) and see if you can get it to boot. If it does you can trensfer the gamesaves and boot the game (without turning it off), you can do an Eeprom backup and copy it into the gamesave that's on your memcard and get it onto your computer through A.R. (or you could just FTP in while at the softmod menu to get the backup). If you are able to get your Eeprom you can lock another HDD to that box.
Good Luck!!! And Have Fun!!! _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

Well, it looks like the only solution is to put a modchip in. Can you guys recommend a good, but inexpensive chip? Thanks.
