I have tried to search both on these forums and via google in general, all to no avail. What can I say, I suck...
I have an old xbox that I softmodded using the MA method a couple years ago. I played with it a bit, then put it away. Now I would like to install XBMC on it and use it that way.
However, apparently I need to upgrade my dash to v5960 before I can anything...and when I try to load a game like Halo2 to do it via the Live option, it tells me I need to send it for servicing
Can anyone help me with changing my dash to the correct version? I can boot into Xebian, which gives me FTP and the ability to mess with files no problem, but I am too ignorant and too lost in the mass of info on xbox that's around to be able to figure out where to go from there!
Also, while I'm hoping that I can burn the latest AID and boot with it, my xbox has only ever booted ONE burned DVD, *ever*. Someone emailed me this DVD - I haven't had any success using the same brand to create another, so I am kinda at the end of my rope there (I have a crappy Thompson drive)
Little help?

What error do you get when you try Halo 2?

It starts up just fine, but after I navigate to Xbox live, I get "Cannot connect to xbox live". I then select "Troubleshooter". Then it displays "Your xbox requires service. Please contact xbox customer support"
From what I've read, this is a result of the MA softmod.
Sorry If I sound extra stupid - I've never actually played any games on this or anything like that, I picked it up solely to play with it as a computing platform (tho my roomie plays games on it, he's totally useless for advice on this problem).

From previous posts I read there should be an error number near the top right some where. _________________ My Soft Mod Adventure - http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/postt23809.html

If you logged on to live with out duel boot or from the hack dash then the error you are getting is because they have banned that xbox from live.

That can't be it - I've never used the live stuff until last week (there isn't even an option on my xbox to do so), and even then it hasn't been hooked up to the network at all (it's just been sitting on my workbench). It's never had an opportunity to get banned.
Not sure what is meant by dual boot. I only have one dash, the MS one, and from the main menu there is an option to boot into linux (Xebian).
My understanding was that Halo 2 could upgrade my dash without actually connecting to the 'net. Is this not the case?

I do have re-mod stuff - I have the action replay kit, and MA. However, I cannot manage to burn a DCD or CD that my xbox will accept I've tried 3 burners and 8 different kinds of discs I know it CAN be done, because I was sent one that worked. Any advice???

I always thought you just had to play halo2 and the dash would update,no need for going online.have you got any other newer games apart from halo2 coz im sure i read somewhere that most games will update your dash past a certain release date.
in the other dash that you have is ther a file expolrer or file manager option.if so you could try putting some of the discs you made back in and see if you can copy them over from your d drive to your apps folder.

Apparently it doesn't update the dash, so no joy.
And the dash I have is just a modified MS dash - the only extra option it gives me is to boot linux. so ftp'ing stuff into an apps folder wouldn't help.

what programmes have you been using to burn files to disc, did you try qwix?
i think if you are going to even reinstall a softmod you need the dash update for that as well.

Nero and Brasero. haven't tried qwix yet, how does it make a difference?
And I know I need the dash update...the problem is how to get it now that I've already got the Xebian softmod in place

it needs to be in the form of an iso or xiso.

It needs to be an xiso built with QWIX or craxtion and most xbox drives will read DVD-r the best.
If the soft mod is in place why do you need to update the dash, if the dash had to be updated to work the soft mod would not have been copied to the HDD.?
I would pull the eeprom and use xboxhdm to rebuild a stock HDD and then soft mod it with SID5.

OK, I will try it with QWIX. The instructions for AID said any burner would do.
The soft mod was done 2yrs ago, using Xebian & the MA softmod. Now I would like to install XBMC, but I can't seem to do this without installing a new dash, and I can't install a new dash because the Xebian modified dash can't be upgraded (and no, I can't find any backup for the original)
I *want* to use one of the more recent and flexible dashes in place of the Xebian one, but can't get the Xebian one replaced as the modern ones require a dash v5960.
I alas have no clue how to pull the eeprom - there are too many results that are too sketchy on details + assume a greater knowledge level then I have when I try to google it Can you point me to a decent tutorial?
I can then try to use a different softmod. Provided I can manage to burn a disc that my stupid Thompson drive will read, of course
