Sorry guys... extreme newb here...
I just ordered a copy of Splinter Cell and an Action Replay memory card because I want to softmod my old xbox. But I have a problem:
After reading into the forums here, I've found that my MS Dash needs to be version 5960. I checked mine and it's 4XXX (can't remember exactly, but definitely not up to date). Unfortunately, I'm now living in Japan (with a US XBox) and can't just go rent a "newish" game to automatically update my msdash.
Am I screwed? What will happen if I try to softmod my XBox with an outdated msdash? Is there another way to update the dash without software. I don't have an XBox Live account...
Luckily, the game and replay card were cheap (about $20 for both), but the shipping was expensive!! I hope I didn't waste my money! Thanks for any help! AJ

If you don't care about xbox live you can just pop in any xbox live game with it hooked up to the net and it should update, by doing it this way when you upgrade the HDD they will spot the mod and ban you.
If the xbox has never been on live but you want to use it you need to pop in the newest live game passable with the xbox un hooked from the net.

Does it matter if I don't have an XBox Live account? I never purchased anything related to XBox Live. But I might have an older game that had an Xbox Live feature... if I pop in an XBox Live game while my Xbox is connected to my home network, will it automatically update the dash?

Yeah it should up date by putting in the game and going though the steps of loading live.
