so i ordered a couple cold cathode fans, and they'll be arriving either this morning or tomorrow.
then im gonna polish my jewel clear, and put a nice green cathode under there.
should i put a black backing behind the jewel/cathode and what should i use?
and how should i get the jewel out/clean it.
i saw some tutorials on it, and i think putting the lid in the freezer would work better then hot wire.... anyone with experience gimme a suggetion?

i used the freezer to remove it, and i used a super fine sandpaper, it SMOKED it. but thats whats i wanted.. im not sure what the safest way to clean it so its clean, but then you clean it, then use a hole drill to make the hole with an 1/8th to a 1/16 lip just enough for the jewel to sit on then use a small bead of hot glue around it and stick it back on, then just put the cold cathode on the back side, and you can just leave it, you dont need backing...

after we get holes in our socks we usually rip them in half and use them for oil rags and what not in the garage.
sock + goof off, to clean the jewel?

If you gently twist the lid (after freezing) it should give you enough gap to slide a butter knife in under the jewel. Then you just gently work the knife around, till the jewel pops off.
The way i cleared my jewel was with brasso polish, and clean rags. That way if you are careful, you will clear the jewel, but retain the silver 'XBOX' lettering in the center.
As for the CCFL, if you want a brighter, clearer light, simply have a polish finish on your jewel. To have more of a glow, as stud_man said, use a fine sandpaper, or see if you can get an automotive or glass workshop to sandblast it for you. _________________

i actually got the jewel off with a spatula, and i think that would work the best, its really thing, dosnt bend, and it wont scratch your xbox to crap, now i just have to, drill a bigger hole in the middle and clean the back.
if i rub my xbox with turtle wax will it cover my xbox's small scratches up?
and would that work on the jewel?

That would probably work, but it may take a long time. I would recommend metal polish of one sort or another, because the ABS plastic is pretty hard. _________________

the aluminum shielding made short work of my finger....
tried to slid my finger under it....and half scalped my finger print area of my finger....
i used a soldering gun to melt a circle under the jewel, then punched it out, now i gotta sand it.

I've found that by using a hairdryer on the rear of the case where the jewel sits, warms the adhesive enough to pry it off with a butter knife.
Once off I use Brasso to clear up the jewel.
Yeah it takes a while but the brasso really does a good job. _________________ X-Box V1.1 - X2.6 & Xapter - 40Gb Maxtor HDD

DO NOT USE GOOF OFF
it took the green of quite easy but i couldnt get the silver off, after 20 minutes of wipping it, then my jewel cracked , i wasnt pressing very hard....=\ i think the goof off weaked the plastic...its like a super strong paint remover.
were can i get a cheap jewel?
all the places i sees are rediculous, $15 US, plus shipping

Rubbing Alchohol has the same effect. I have tried 6 or 7 ways and Brasso works the best. You can rub it off in 20 minutes or less if you are in a hurry, or you can soak and rub just a bit if you do not mind waiting.
The jewel will come out perfect, no smoke look or haze, if you do it right it will sparkle perfect clear. I personally prefer them painted to match the top. I have Black for my clearbox and blue on my blue box, but man, that orange jewel looks fire on my orange xbox. I have also had very good luck using brighter metallic paints for black xbox tops. Red metalic with white back coat. OHHHHHH YEEEAAAHHHH!!!
