Hello everyone, first time on this site and new to the Xbox modding community. I'm not entirely sure if this is the best place to ask this. Recently, I bought myself an original Xbox 1.1 from a Goodwill for 20 bucks. According to them it didn't work and I figured I could bring it back to life. Originally, I didn't notice that it had a little switch sticking out of the side of the system. It wasn't until I opened it up to clean up the mess left behind by its clock capacitor. The switch had two connected wires that went on through to the other side where they were soldered. It also had a modchip attached to it that I have yet to properly identify. Here are some pics of it.
I managed to get the Xbox to boot up once again after replacing the damaged ribbon cable and swapping the fan since it wouldn't budge anymore. I decided to also test the switch and see what it does. I then found out that it is what more than likely used to enable the mod to work. Whenever the switch is in the on position, it attempts to boot up three times then flashes red and green without any video on display. Whenever it's in the off position, it of course just boots up normally. I don't really know how to troubleshoot the issue since I am not at all familiar with Xbox modchips.
Which brings me here today. I am certain that someone here might be able to shed some light on what I'm dealing with. It's a bit difficult to find some info for me since i don't know what to search for really. But I'd like nothing more than to get the Xbox mod to work again.

looks like a cheap modchip that was installed so does it boot anything without it installed like the ms dashboard or does it error out if so what error does it show on screen. you might want to check for trace rot under the board too as that might be the issue causing this unless you got the ms dashboard to boot if so then you could softmod then tsop flash it and its pretty easy but we can get to that after you let me know on if its booting to ms dash or not with the chip out? _________________ The one the only Scarface!!

With the chip, it just flashes red and green without any video displayed. With the chip off, it just boots the Xbox like normal. No custom dashboard or anything. I can take a closer pic under the board than the one I linked. I'm not good at identifying trace rot like you mentioned.

no need to if it boots to ms dashboard so there is something wrong with the chip most likely but you can softmod the xbox and then tsop it and flash it and it will have the same effect as the chip.
Stuff needed
Solder iron
Solder
flux
one of the games that can be exploted i like to use splinter cell
xbox memory card or a usb to xbox adapter and a flash drive i use 128mb one
hexen or aid
if your up to this we can help
as the chip goes it might of been flashed wrong as from what i see the points look good and that but they might of flashed it with wrong bios and those cheapmod ones i dont think can be reflashed i could be wrong but i dont think so unless you had the chip on wrong or if they put it on wrong that can sometimes mess up a chip too.
i actually think i have this same chip installed in one of my boxes i got too so tomorrow i will have a look at it and see if anything else is different as mine is setup with a switch too ha. but its 12am and i need to get up really early to do some errands. do you know if the hard drive is bigger or stock? _________________ The one the only Scarface!!

I actually planned on softmodding it and doing the TSOP thing. Just gonna have to wait till the first since I am low on funds currently. So I am unable to buy some of the things that I am missing.
Now, according to the lady who sold it to me. She said that it belonged to one of their sons and that it worked originally. It has an 80GB Samsung Spinpoint harddrive on it. It wasn't until another one of their sons recently attempted to hook it up to a computer and install more games due to not understanding how it's supposed to be done. They figured it was broken and gave it away to Goodwill. And now I have it in my possession and got it to start up at least.

It's not a cheapmod. That's a Lattice LC4032V CPLD on the top and there's an SST49LF040 Flash memory chip on the bottom side. Well as to which side is the top and bottom is a toss-up. I've never seen such a modchip. Don't find such a chip in the modchip tables that were on xbox-scene.com either.

Can you take some clearer pictures of both sides (from straight above) of the modchip and post them? Thanks.

That's why I'm here. I have not been able to find any other mentions of it. Here are some more pics.
