Hi
I have a xbox original from 2004 and i recently decided to softmod it.
I bought splintercell and a sony microvault tiny (supposed to be compatible...)
And wired up a usb to controller cord.
I went to plug in the usb and booted up, but the xbox doesn't find it
no error no screen flashing no nothing.

Make sure to format the USB right.

1)Plug it into your PC and click on format
2)Pick FAT/FAT16/FAT 32 and an allocation size of 4096
3)Plug it into the XBOX, turn it on then go to memory
4)Should get a message saying it wasnt functioning proper and was erased

And dont go by the lists claiming such and such USB works. They are pure hogwash. WHile two USBs may have the same brand name like 2GB Sandisk Cruzer more often than not they have different memory controllers so USB A works fine while USB B does not. There is nothing standardized other than the plug with USB drives. If you want a guaranteed memory device use an SD card. The memory controller is uniform across the industry as specific standards must be met to use the SD specification. Just grab a cheapo USB/SD card reader from the local discount store

I also tried formatting to fat, fat32, and fatx and it made no difference.

Powered devices like this

Wont work the USB ports on the XBOX dont carry enough current to power it. When I say USB card reader I mean like this

And all memory devices must be 4GB or less. And if your XBOX even after formatting the USB with FAT/FAT16/FAT32 and a forced allocation size of 4096 is not getting recognized then its no good. As I said above when it comes to USB thumbdrives its a crap shoot

These work perfect, I own 3 of them and best part is they are USB1.1 compliant which is what the XBOX uses

I got the bottom one...

will this work? [/https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-microSD-Memory-SDC-2GBSP/dp/B00181BHRK/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1520387722&sr=8-7&keywords=micro+sd+card+2gb]

If the reader you suggested doesn't work should i assume it's something wrong with my xbox?

I would be very amazed if it didnt work for you. Ive been using those readers for years. And as I said SD memory controller is standardized so as long as its 4GB or less you will not get any issues from the card itself.

Heres a vid of me using one of those adapters and a 4GB SD. As you can see I already had it formatted and loaded with saves. Purposefully corrupted it, reformated to FAT32 4096 and the XBOX reformatted it to FATX no issue. If youd like I also have a 256MB and 2GB card sitting here both differing brands (Sandisk, Lexar and Kingston) and can show them also working no issue.

And worst case scenario I just ordered 3 more of those adapters, shoot me 10 bucks and I will send you one with an SD already formatted and loaded with saves of your choice. The other thing to do if youre in a hurry to get this done is go to the dollar store and grab some flash drives. More often than not I find the cheapo knockoff ones actually work better than the big name ones do

The reader and card finally came, but are doing the same exact thing.
This is getting really frustrating...

Then your DIY adapter is bunk. Id pull it apart, resplice, wrap with EP ignore the yellow and try again

If you want, PM me your address and I will send you a working adapter with SD and reader. You send me your non working adapter SD and reader. Stuffs small enough we can ram it in envelope and mail it for a buck.
