First post here. O.k. I am expecting anyday now my xenium ice chip. I am dealing with a version 1.0 xbox here. Aside from downloading the x2 bios disc from the VIPDOWNLOADS section, and maybe the EVOX autoinstaller, can anyone recommend any other preparation that I can do to get up and going as painlessly as possible? I'm not looking to change my HD just yet, basically looking to back up what I own and be able to play 'em.

If you have a 1.0 xbox then you should get ready to desolder the LPC area. I am sure you have already seen what the LPC looks like. In the early xbox's MS used to fill the holes. Just buy some braid and a 30 watt iron for desoldering. Most people say to use a 40 watt iron, but I just a 30 watt. I install the chip with a 15 watt. Sometimes, I use my 30. But, I have been getting a lot of splash with the hotter iron..don't know why.
Understand how to make a bios boot cd unless you plan on FTP'ing the bios intor your machine. That to me is the easiest way. If I come across a Samsung DVD Drive then I usually just do it by CD, but if it's a Thompson I don't bother playing the, "lets see what media will work" game and just FTP the bios.bin file to the xbox HD C folder/drive.
If you aren't going to use an autoinstaller, then I would suggest these two apps for backing up games.
PxHDD Loader due to its ease and DVD2Xbox due to it removing certain things that make newer games not work when you backup and burn to disk.
I have backed up several of my newer games with PxHDD loader to my xbox HD and they play fine, but when I FTP them to my PC and use CXboxTool2 to create the .ISO file for burning the game won't work.
If I use DVD2xbox to rip it, then I have no issues. So, I have been leaning on that program a little more than usual.
For your PC you will want to have a game iso creation and extraction program. You can use Nero for the normal stuff, but for games you need something that will patch the game for you. CXboxTool2 works well, but that isn't the only one.
Well, besides what I have already emailed you that is all that I can think of. We have some real knowledgable members here so if I am sure you will get loads of solid advice.

Nope that would be about all you would need, unless you want Emulators aswell.
My Xbox-Hq Emulator Auto-Installer has nearly 20 different emulators to choose from. Unforunately I haven't supplied roms on the installer mainly due to the fact of filesizes.
Apart from that you sound like you're on the right track...

Using the no-solder method (if that's an option) will I still have to de-solder the LPC? Reading tutorials about the no solder method makes it seem more simple than pin-header and quick solder. I'm no soldering pro, I'd be lying if I said that I even knew that de-solder was before entering into this "prep" phase of my mod.

That's why our site is gaining so much popularity lately.
It's not really just one or two of us that do all the replies, as soon as a member learns something it's not unusual for them to help someone else out who is just starting.
The VIP Membership gives you basically everything you'll ever need for your Xbox, including a private VIP Ticket section where only the Admins can see your questions (a good spot it you're embarrased about asking a question, hehehe).
Quick note to kshaistephens: See my signature at the bottom of my post? It would be great if you could make a signature for yourself describing your Xbox setup. This helps us analyse problems you might have. Thanks in advance mate...
Cheers to all at Team Xbox-Hq!!

I have never used a solderless adapter as I feel the pinheader install is a more professional install and I do a lot of 1.6's and the pinheader is extremely recommended.
Does it come with rivets like other solderless adapters? And if it does, wouldn't you need to put the rivets through a hole??
Not that I am going to be using any solderless adapters, just want to make sure I have the correct info in case someone asks down the road.

OIC, taking a look at solderless install now...
I guess the bottom portion of the adapter would make contact with the solder....I would be too worried of poor contact and future frags to do that type of install..
maybe for my own machine it wouldn't matter as I wouldn't mind opening it up and tightening or realigning...
But someone who doesn't want to have to do that may want to use the pinheader or quicksolder method.

I know what you mean though, the easier you can make it on a new modder the better.
Glad you have had good results with your solderless mod!
