Right, I did gather it would be a case of transferring the files via a memory stick again, but do I have to run it via Mech Assault again or will it just run itself? Or do I run it via Softmod? Or am I just being totally dim lol

To run anything you need to be modded, the xbox can only run music movies and games unless you mod it first.

OK so once you've installed Softmod and have the chimp program on your memory stick the softmod program will just recognise it? Sorry I'm being simple aren't I lol. I'm sure it will be clear once I have it all up and running. How do I get the CHIMP software? can I get hold of it like I did the SID files or do I go via the site downloads here? Cheers
Download Auto Installer Deluxe : http://aidtracker.com/ It has a comprehensive collection of dashboards, Applications and Emulators - everything you could need is included - Use the AID disc to install `Chimp` as an application to your E/ partition, run Chimp, hook up your new hard drive in place of the DVD Rom drive and follow the onscreen prompts. _________________

Ok thanks that sounds simple enough! So can I have Auto Installer Deluxe on my machine as well as the SID program? I assume so

Also, can someone just clarify, Wes mentioned that it can be installed "with the aid disc" Do I have to burn the software to a cd via an ISO or something? So assuming thats how I run AID, I just wanna clarify the following:
I install SID
Backup the eeprom (and move it from my e partition to pc via mem stick? Can you see/manage the partitions once you've installed SID?)
Then install AID
Then Install Chimp
Setup the new hdd
So I just wandered, once you have all of the above installed, how does it work exactly? I mean when do SID and AID run alongside or does one overwrite the other?
Just a LITTLE bit further!! Nearly there lol
I'm just waiting for my memory card to arrive from play.com, then need to download AID tonight. I got the CHIMP files, how do you install it? Is it just a case of moving the chimp files to the xbox via memory stick again? How do you then actually Install it? I referred to the guide for Chimp someone posted but its instructions simply assume that you HAVE Chimp installed already lol. Cheers

Ok so I've got pretty much everything clear in my head now, other than actually going in and doing the SID and seeing how it goes, and then seeing how things like installing the CHIMP program via AID (I have no idea how this works but I'm sure it won't be too complicated)
Does this affect much other than installing SID?? Or am I ok? Can someone confirm if I do actually have v6? Because I looked at the manufacture grid in that link and it looked like my one isn't even listed lol.
Looks like a v1.6 to me, makes no difference SID will work on all versions - you`re gonna have some fun with Chimp though, the cloning process is slightly more involved.
Get SID files on your xbox and use MechAssault to install the SoftMod.
FTP in and back up your eeprom (Learn the FTP bit, it`ll prepare you for the slightly more complex HDD upgrade).
Burn AID to disc and use it to install any Apps, Dashes and Emus you require. _________________

Lol, yeah it looks more "involved" to say the least heh
The instructions for installing CHIMP are simply enough (The one written by Final Cloud) But at the bottom there is a link to a tut for v1.6 xbox, I read it and unfortunately it makes NO sense to me what so ever lol
Anyway yeah cool thanks bud, I'm sweet for the SID and AID bits and getting the Mech Assault files over to my xbox, JUST waiting for my mem stick which was posted by play.com last night. Should be SID-ed by Monday at the latest (Easter bank hol, 4 day weekend WOOOT!!!)
My only hazy parts now are how the FTP will work with my laptop-xbox setup, I did ask a question about my FTP options given my current network setup in the other thread so that should hopefully get cleared up.
The other one thats still bugging me is the whole Eeprom thing, I get that I have to back up my original xbox dash etc, but some of the guides I've read make it sound like the Eeprom is something separate altogether, don't suppose you could elaborate on the Eeprom as in what its for and what it does etc?
The eeproms programmed with the Hard drive key (and Region, MAC address and stuff to identify you on Live) - the hard drive is unique to your xbox, its paired with the motherboard, if things go tits up somewhere down the road you can use the eeprom backup and xboxhdm to create a new hard drive from scratch.
You may want to check out `xboxhdm` as an alternative to Chimp _________________

Ok so I have a suggestion, do I need to back up the Eeprom etc if I have no intention (or the ability) to take my xbox online?
Regarding your suggestion of xboxhdm as an alternative to CHIMP. I found the following:
I read a bit about it and it mentions Linux, unfortunately I know nothing about that platform other than what it is. I assume you can just burn xboxhdm to a disc and use it like AID or do you have to install it VIA AID?? Don't suppose theres a help tut around for this? I couldn't see one.
I will just leave it at the SID install for now and till I get clarification on how the crossover cable will work as it looks like theres no point running AID/CHIMP as my xbox is 1.6. I probably will burn AID to disc, at least then I have it if I need it.
It makes good sense to create an eeprom backup, if you are running a SoftMod and something goes pear shaped (Like you accidently delete a dashboard file or format something you shouldnt - or your brother does it) it can become mighty frustrating trying to fix things, at least with an eeprom backup you can gain access to your locked hard drive (or create a whole new other one) and start to fix things .... basically, without an eeprom backup (on your PC or burned to disc) your xbox is pretty much knackered.
(Before someone mentions it, theres also a `hotswap` to correct things, but thats for tards who didnt back up their eeprom)
Dont become too overwhelmed with all these options, get SID running and enjoy your modded xbox, if you feel the need to tinker some more theres plenty help on offer in these forums.
As for xboxhdm, its a Linux distro you boot on your PC - you need to hook up your xbox hard drive as the primary master and run xboxhdm in the CD Rom, its temporary and only used for fixing xbox hard drives, once your drive is repaired reconnect your IDE cables to the relevant bits in your PC and run Windows again.
For your Crossover cable, hold the two ends side by side, if the wires inside the end connectors aren`t in the same order on both bits its a Crossover cable you have. _________________

Cool, cheers bud. I definitely have a crossover cable as it has a printed label that says "Crossover" on it lol, but I also made one myself incase the other doesn't work.
Ok so I will definitely backup the Eeprom etc, I take it I have to be able to FTP etc to back that up, or rather its advisable right? Once I've done the SID I can then use FTP to move files to and from the xbox right??
Ok that Xboxhdm sounds a bit messy, and to be fair, my pc only has SATA HDD's plugged in anyway. I would have to unplug my dvd drives as well to get an ide hdd plugged in again.
So with all the above and the fact that my xbox is a 1.6 version, what course do you think would be easiest for me to take to get my 160ide HDD into my xbox? I mean the way that involves the least mess and confusion.
Cheers mate, as usual, your a great help

Ok so I got the memory stick today, moved the folder you told me to over to the memory stick after the xbox formatted it, moved the file from the memory stick to the xbox and it all seemed to be working. I went into mechassault and clicked the run linux but all that happens is my xbox reboots the game and the light around the eject button flashes red and green. Any ideas what I did wrong? Maybe I have a bad Mech Assault Copy? Maybe my files corrupt? BUGGER!!!!
Did you copy the SID loader.MechAssault file over ? ... theres also the SID installer file you need to transfer - folder 21585554.
Two folders in total.
I think your best course of action would be to sus out the FTP situation, then once you`re comfortable with it install Chimp and Telnet into your xbox to upgrade the harddrive .... Its simple stuff really. _________________
