Hurrah! I successfully soft-modded my box..
Thanx to forahobby and crazyfruitbat for your help. Sorry its been so long getting back to u but ive been in Sydney. Thought I'd just post back and let u know how it went and also to tell other noob modders how simple it is to softmod ur box urself.
I followed the "SoftModding the Xbox in 10 Minutes Using SID" then the "Install Larger Hard-Drive into SoftModded Xbox" tutorials by Michael Brim on this site and had no problems at all. I would reccommend them to anyone. Anyway maybe this will help someone.
- FUNCTION -
A softmodded box is basically the same as having a mod chip cept u cant turn it off. I would recommend it to anyone who to wants to unlock the full potential of their xbox and isnt interested in xbox live..
- COST -
Softmodding can be done without any knowledge of electronics and at little cost. The total price is basically the price of the new hard drive (If u want one.) I put a 200 Gb which cost $135.
All u need is a copy of splinter cell, a pc, an action replay or usb to xbox cable and thumb drive, a hard drive if u want one and a bit of time on ur hands. I wont bother going into details of the process as u can find it in the tutorials above but I will give a few tips.
- TIPS -
1. Follow all instructions carefully. Its a simple process but messing up some steps can cause fatal problems for ur box.
2. BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP The tutorials tell u to do this for a reason. Don't be hasty, always backup ur MS dash, eeprom and drives before formatting or installing softmods / dashboards.
3. After backing up when u are prompted to install Evox to C:\ or E:\. It is best to install to E:\ then select it as the boot drive. This way ur MS dashboard will remain intact on C:\ in case u need it.
4. If u are using a USB to XBOX cable and a standard thumb drive ur thumb drive will need to be formatted to fat-X. U can do this byplugging it in to ur box, powering it up and going to memory, then ur drive.
Ur PC will now not recognise this drive so u will need to use the Action Replay Software on ur PC. U may also need to edit ur Action replay software to get it to work with ur drive. Download USBVIEW and follow this tut:
Well thats about all the tips I can think of.. Its pretty straight forward. noob modders - Don't be put off by the tech talk. It really is easy to do as long as u follow the tuts, and the results are well worth it . This site is really helpful as are the auto-installers etc.
I'm damn happy with mine.. It rocks.. Im going to get so much more use out of it. My only gripe is that I didnt do it sooner
Im also having a go at doing some evox skins. I'll let u know if I come up with anything good.

Thank you very much. I found your article very easy to follow.
Also, I created a USb to XBOX cable for my memory card and I used your guide and links and now it works perfectly! Awesome.

In MS-Dash I am unable to copy my game saves to a the memory card. I only have the delete option. There isn't a COPY option. Is there a way to update MS-Dash or do I need to copy the game saves an alternate way. I am running Avalaunch as my current dashboard. My XBOX is softmodded with the 007 exploit.

your problem is that your choosing your game tittle, that only has the erease option, but press right, and you'll choose your GAMESAVE, that is what you copy.

I like this topic. Softmods are overlooked. They're insanely powerful, and all I really do locally because they're cheap, they're quick, and hella effective. I have 4 boxes, 2 fully funtional, and both softmodded with SID. I've upgraded one HDD in my friend's 1.5 box, and I've had NO complaints yet. I say, go on with the softmodding! Chips are great, but if all you want to do is have that modded box and brag to your friends, go with the cheaper route. Just don't mess up. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."
