Tried yanking the hard drive out of the xbox. Read a bit about "hot swapping" to get it unlocked and get windows to detect it.
Kind of work, a little bit, maybe...I could get device mgr to detect it and the WD drive now shows up in device mgr but...it didn't assign it any drive letters so that's pretty much useless...at least so far.

Found an app called hdd drivers but it doesn't want to run on this windows xp box. Tosses up dll errors. Force fed it the dll's but it stilled errored out.
Perhaps there is another app to use to read this drive.
Tried "Fatexplorer" as well and get a visual c++ runtime error / buffer over run.
This ain't getting any easier.

Found and tried xboxhdm v1.9. I managed to pull off the "hot swap" and the program worked. Chose option #2 "Rebuild C-partition on existing xbox drive". I left it formatted only and got error 16. I found some files called "factory c: drive" in the newsgroups and installed that using the same program but it didn't look right and didn't work...error 16.
Still trying.

I don't know why I recalled that the softmod left a backup in E: as well. Used xboxhd to move all of the files from E/backup/MS to c: and it actually worked.
Put back in the original 007 game / action replay save / softmod and it worked again. This time I plopped in the Auto-Installer 2.0 dvd and tried to install the softmod / msdash but it didn't make it ::
"Batch process failed the last item was action : rename".
Tried patching MSDash 5960 from the softmod install but got basically the same error as to "rename".
At least I'm back to where I started and couldn't be any happier.
Would be nice to get that MSDash to work still but without an absolutely flawless fix I'll be delighted with what I've got.
