Ok I'll be heading over to the guy's house within an hour.

Here's what I'll do to double check with you. With a blank HDD I should:

1.) type option '1' for boot pimped.

2.) type 'xboxhd'

3.) then hit '5' for 'wipe current fatx partition table?

True/False?

Once I know which command formats the HDD, builds the partition and receive confirmation from linux program those steps were successful, I can just type 'reboot', start at root menu, do option 3 for locking/unlocking and test the unlock feature from there.

Much thanks

EDIT: Also to double check I plug in the 'Primay Drive (Master) cable into the HDD when using autobuilder correct? As shown in figure 3, page 3 of this WD HDD manual.

@SPPV

I am at the seller's house right now for the next few hours.

Are you able to provide skype support through the xbox hq contact on skype at any time within the next few hours?

Does disabling 'auto-detection' mean chaning the drive geometry or something like that? Or is there something else going on?

i could've SWORN i explained the ide/pata device positions on a compatible computer before today...hmm? Confused
set hdd jumper to MASTER and have that on chennel 0/ide flyer 1, plug 1 (nearest to the motherboard) then...
set optical drive jumper to SLAVE and have that on channel 0/ide flyer 1, plug 2 (furthest from the motherboard) then boot up autobuilder!
make sure bios is set to boot from the optical drive ONLY and the target hdd is VISIBLE in bios! DISABLE all other boot priorities, just the optical drive you're booting from for this task!
...................
i did find THIS as a youtube search result on autobuilder usage...a few entries so choose which works for you!
oh, while you post in a PUBLIC arena, REMEMBER that it's subject to OTHER users chipping in their bit and is just as valid! Hi all,

The guy's first HP compaq tower was shit, it just wouldn't lock the hard drive.

Buuuuuut he had another old tower in his basement with linux on it.

It has an Intel Pentium III processor and it's a Micron Millenia tower.

It was able to lock and unlock the hard drive, so now I'm copying the files over now!

Thanks all! Long live Xbox HQ!

Edit: @Amiga1200

I hear ya about this being a public forum, I was just being impatient he he...

I'm so close to getting an xbox 1 with emulators to play now! My spring break this week is gonna be EPIC!

LOL my one-hundredth post was announcing my complete HDD upgrade worked!

A local guy offers me a tower by Hewlett Packard with an AMD based Motherboard for about 50 bucks.

As I got to know, you should go for AMD, since its perfect for locking HDDs.
But this one is built by HP, which you should avoid in general:

Does this matter?
Is the brand important or is the only thing that matters the motherboard?

Quick help would be appreciated.
Thanks for reply!

Only the motherboard should matter. With that said, I don't think I've ever heard of a computer that wasn't able to lock an Xbox hard drive. I know with the Xbox 360 DVD drives a specific chipset works best, but with the original Xbox I think anything goes.

Yeah. It's just so that Intel is shit for locking uses.
I have a Intel based CPU which doesn't allow me to lock my HDDs and it is built by HP.
Just got afraid that Hewlett Packard is a no go since it often has Intel inside.

But for the Computer in the offer has AMD, I don't have to worry, right?
Shall I better test the computer at the sellers house like halofan did, or can I simply pick it since it has AMD Athlon 64?

Thx guys! Wink

No worries, I have an Athlon64 HP I use and it works fine. I did have to tweak the BIOS, infact every HP Ive used I had to. Before running HDM go into BIOS and switch detection on the Primary IDE to Manual (never Auto with HP) And it will lock fine.

Of course if you can get a non HP do it, the Pegasus motherboards they use are trash, so are the PSU. Mine has a ISO PSU tuck taped to the outside of the case cause the shitty HP PSU died after like 5 months.

Main things to look for with PC for HDM are AMD CPU and minimum 1 IDE channel.

Alright.
Thank you very much for the reply!

By the way:
Before I get this Computer:
Is there a chance to tweak mine (HP with Intel) in order to lock properly?
I know this is a shitty combo for locking HDDs but is there a chance?

What I can tell is that it doesnt lock any drive (I tried 3 compatible models) with HDM.
And the BIOS does not allow me to disable this Auto-Detection-Thingy.

But while I was browsing the PC i found out that it lets me disable Auto Detection in the Device Manager.
Do you think it will work to disable that, shut down the computer and then go through XboxHDM process succesfully?

Or should I just spent a bit money to be on the safe side?

Thank you ,Sir!

Only detection within the BIOS matters. Within Windows doesnt matter since Windows wont be running. Thats the big issue with Intel, many BIOS dont allow the disabling of Auto-Detection, thats why I just say AMD only. Its a crapshoot with Intel, might lock, might not. But AMD its 100% it will lock.

This is very good to know.
I will defently go for AMD now.

I have just one more practical question:
Say I buy this computer (just to remember: HP with AMD Athlon 64), go home, set everything up (HDD on primary master, dvd Drive as slave) and put the computer on:
Shall i directly go into BIOS and disable Automatic-Detection or simply boot to the Linux-Disc and try to run through the process?
SPPV, you have a similar computer:
What would you do?

And if we're at this theme already:
I plan to get a new HDD for my Xbox together with this computer.
Do you know if this one does lock:

Seagate Barracuda 500 GB
ST 3500830A
7200 RPM
8 MB Cache
3.5''

?

I just want to be sure it is NOT THE HARD DRIVE that eventually doesn't work.
Thank you very much for the quick and great support, this is very helpful!

Disable detection right away. Also Linux Locking Tools will tell you if its the HDD or not. If you get the messge Unable to lock Scurity Frozen thats the BIOS causing the issue. If it says Unable to Lock Security Not Supported then it means the HDD doesnt support locking

Disabling detection wont affect it for regular PC uses either. I leave it off on my tower and still use it with XP/Ubuntu no issue. And if it has a SATA HDD like mine you can leave it hooked up since HDM doesnt detect SATA so no worries about wiping it by accident.

That HDD should work okay. I use a 250GB from that line and seagate uses the same firmware for the drives in each line so all should support locking.

I'll let you know how I'm doing. Wink
