It sounds like the laser isn't powerful enough to read the disc and once it hits an error it just gives up and tries to read the centre of the disc.
Some time soon I might be chucking a DVD drive I have because I'm making a slim Xbox. Maybe you would want it? _________________

I'm not actually sure I'll be doing it though. I still have a lot of research to go on for the next project and it may take a long time.
The DVD drive is a Thompson from a 1.6 (the good thompsons, not the cheap ones). It is a bit noisy (whines a lot) and it doesn't read some formats but it is fine for games and some DVDs. _________________
