IDE can have a HDD and a disk drive running on the same cable. You'd want to set the HDD as master and the disk drive as slave though.

It would make more sense to just plug the HDD into the open IDE spot though and make sure to set it as master. It should work for you just fine.

I was wondering - since the only problem I'm going to run into on my pc is the actual locking part of the xboxhdm process, couldn't I just run the whole process on my Intel pc right up until I need to reboot to lock the drive, then just shut down instead, take out the hdd and DVD, put it into the HP AMD pc and boot up the disc to actually lock the drive?

I just don't love the idea of using the HP DVD drive for anything important, because it does act very flaky. I'd hate for it to act up while creating the hdd - like I mentioned earlier the drive tends to read extremely slow, and cannot even play retail DVDs without it being so choppy it's unwatchable. This way my pc will do all the disc reading and hdd creation, and I will only need the HP for the actual locking of the disc. Is there any reason why I couldn't do it that way?

For that matter, would there be any harm in me trying to lock the drive in my own pc? If it fails, then couldn't I just transfer it to the HP from there and lock it, or is this a bad idea? Is there any harm in trying it?

I would go with the first idea and build it on your PC then lock it on the other. Lock failure isnt the only Intel issue its also been linked to frozen security so best to not even risk it if you dont have to

I think you should just be able to lock in on your HP. It sounds like you may also want to go with the chimp method for making a hard drive:http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-260.html

Okay I guess I'll create the drive on my pc and then lock it on the HP. I just read the guide on chimp - is there any drawback or benefiit to doing it that way if I decide to? Keep in mind I'm using a 500GB drive so I don't know if that would make any difference. If I use the chimp method, will I still have to re-do the softmod like I would if I used the xboxhdm method? And would I need to make any new partitions or will both ways give me the same partitions?

If you wait Im just testing a new method now that will aloow you to get the eeprom to your PC without modding it, obviating the need to mod, build and mod again

Chimp will do everything for you that xboxhdm on the xbox without needing a computer. I have always liked that method a lot better because there is a lot less work required. You will have to softmod it first but if I remember correctly the softmod should carry over since it copies the files straight over.

This isnt my finished product since Im hitting a wall with AR saying its not a valid save once Ive modified it. My basic idea was to change an Ndure softmod package into an eeprom and AID backdoor, by enabling autoplay for XBOX games, data and adding a launch DVD and filemanager function and removing the reset when the tray opens. My theory is that once youve accesed the game save and hit the softmod menu you are essentialy allready modded and have the ability to run a burned disc, hence the autolaunch, second you hit the screen throw in AID and just do a 1 click softmod removing the double softmodding normaly involved in using SID and then doing the 1 click.

Good news is I have a way for you to get the eeprom very easily without actualy modding the XBOX.

Step 1 Copy the SID gamesave exploits to your XBOX then erase the mem card
Step 2 Put in the exploit game (SC, 007 mechassault)
Step 3 Proceed as if doing a softmod until you hit the SID scree
Step 4 Backup EEPROM
Step 5 Open filemanager and copy EEPROM.bin to the mem card or usb device
Step 6 Use Xplorer360 to copy the eeprom to the eeprom folder in XBOXHDM and put virgin dash files in C folder

The other option is once the eeprom backup has completed FTP in (you will need to use IE and a crossover cable) and you can FTP off the C, E and EEPROM

You can now build a 500GB drive lock it and put it in and mod removing the need to do it twice.

Once Ive gotten the modified save issue sorted out I will test the other part of my theory of not even doing a softmod to access AID and do a 1 click

EDIT
It would appear even when using one of the pre live one xboxs and using the easter egg to run files preloaded it will not work. Same with using a modified Ndure installer to boot straight to AID. It seems the only way my idea will work in any form is if you FTP AID to the HDD then open SID go to file manager and click the XBE, which is pointless since it saves no time and in no way makes the mod easier.

Sorry it isn't working out the way you had hoped.

I got my xbox/usb cable in the mail today so I can use my Kingston Datatraveler 2gb memory stick. So will your idea about copying the EEPROM without doing the softmod first still work okay? It sounds like I would just do everything I normally would do with the initial softmod up until I backup the EEPROM, correct?

From that point, I'm guessing I would find the filemanager in the SID menu? And that would let me copy the EEPROM to the memory stick through the usb cable?

From there would I just shut down the xbox and then put the memory stick in the pc and use Xplorer360 to copy the EEPROM to the XBOXHDM folder? What other files would I need to copy over to the XBOXHDM folder along with the EEPROM? I just want to make sure I get this right.

From there I would just create the XBOXHDM disc and build & lock the 500GB hard drive as normal? And then do the softmod from the beginning after installing the new hard drive?

One other thing - Does it matter which port I put the xbox controller into and which port I put the usb cable with the memory stick in? I will need to use the controller to navigate the SID menu so I'm assuming I can have both connected at the same time, right?

Sounds like this will save me a bit of work not having to do the softmod twice - thanks for coming up with that.

You got it right, since you got a 2GB stick, you can copy the C and E drive as well and put them in their respective folders. If you copy straight from the root (ie C drive not the folders inside) you can just replace the C and E folders in XBOXHDM. File manager is available right in SID (I suspect DJB had some of the same ideas as me). I use controller port 4 for my USB (wired in) it should show up as drive N in that port. If for some reason File Manager wont let you copy C use the backup option then copy the backup folder from E. Its the exact same as my HDD build tut only youre using a USB drive instead of FTP to transfer the files and you will only be modding once instead of twice. Wish I had thought of this a while ago would have saved me alot of wasted time Embarassed

Im making progress on my other idea though, got it so it will boot to the splash screen then it resets to the XBOX logo, which leads me to believe I am on the right track and it can be done. Shocked

good luck with it man, hang in there.. It sounded like you nearly had it perfect till you did a bit more testing.

If you havent done your hdd build yet Ive got an installer disc for you Very Happy

It will set up your new drive, install SID5, XBMC, DVDx, DVD2XBOX, Enigmah, FCEUltra, MednafenxPCE, NeoGenesis, PCSXBOX, Surreal64, XBOXYAdvance, ZSNEX and a ton of skins in about 15 minutes.

Gotta figure a distribution method since when I try to upload it it says its to large
