I have had my house running DHCP for a few years now and not a single IP has changed since i set it up, even with a new PC getting hooked up every day they have not changed.

Why is it i seem to be the only one? LOL

easy to explain, Lease time
in my case the Lease time is set to 14 day`s this means that once i boot my computer it wil receive an ip, once i turn off the computer, the lease time makes sure my computer gets the same ip evry time i boot it up,
only thing is that the next time i boot it it has to be whit in 14 day`s since last bootup.
If i remember my school theory right, and you run your own dhcp by using win2k3 server it can even be set to never expire, in that case even if a computer isnt used for a year it wil stil receive the same ip.

Hold the two ends of the cable side by side, have a look at the order of the coloured internal strands of cable, if they are in identical order then its just a straight through patch cable you have.

Try another pc or use my tutorial to find out what cable you are running for sure. Sounds like it could be just a normal RJ45 patch cable and not a crossover.

Cross-over cable OR Ethernet patch cable?!?!

Well the easier way to see if the cable is work is to connect from pc to xbox and check the lights for actvity on both.. that way you can be sure that the cable is ok..

A router/switch should also light up when you connect to it with your crossover cable, it has to be in the correct port though i think.

It could be something as simple as your FIREWALL you are running on your pc.. You could try turning it off etc etc..

weird your having so much trouble man.. Sad
