Well, really with a NAS, you don't have to hook it up to a computer...it hooks directly to your network via a network cable. But its still slow. An external drive though hooked to a PC is OK..no hiccups streaming. Internal or external are OK, but I would stay away from a NAS. _________________ My Setup:

That was my main point if you need more pc hdd then your best bets to go with someting internal.

Thats cool and all but when you think about the point of his post dont you think his best sot is a bigger hdd for the laptop not a nas drive, those things are a half @$$ way to run the same track.

I was running a NAS for a bit, but took it back to the store...too slow for my likings. I was running the same as you, laptop only...ended up buying a cheap a$$ second hand PC and chucked a big HD in that, works A1. You don't need anything wicked fast.
Even with a laptop and a big drive, you have to always leave it on when you are streaming..kind of a pain. Thats why I went with a dirt cheap old PC and threw in a huge drive. PC can stay on 24\7. _________________ My Setup:

i was just going to run the NAS directly to the xbox, or maybe NAS to router then xbox, so that i can stream from my laptop too. Do you reckon that would be slow?
also, i thought NAS was fast? how was it slow for you? what was the problem?

It will give you glitches in the pic and have drag spots whare the data hangs.
Hook it up and try it if you dont see the prob then you got what you want.

i dont get it, i thought network was as fast as USB? or at least more than fast enough for video streaming, what is the bottleneck between a nas drive directly connected to an xbox?
i understand if it was running through the PC first it would be slower, but surely a nas drive direct would be as fast/good as streaming from a PC?

Well with out a bunch of tech crap with a nas drive you have the xbox pulling the info from the drive.
With a pc hdd the xbox pulls the info and the pc pushes the info.
Just like the xbox will pull the info from a nas drive in fast bursts and then you get a small gap of info before the next burst but with a pc the info gets driped in to the xbox at a smooth rate so the xbox wont hit its limit and take a brake.

I dont know man its been a long time since i used a nas drive thay may have worked out the kinks but i wold get 2 500gb hdds and mod a second xbox, put the 500gb hdds in the xbox and use it like a nas drive i have seen some good turn outs with this setup.
Why you need so much space?

i've just got that much media
this is annoying because i dont want to rename and transfer 500GB+ of files to the xbox's fatx system and have it stuck there, and then theres the cost and noise of running 2 xboxes.
i might wait about 10 months and see what terabyte drive prices are like then but i'll still have the same problem of renaming and transferring all that media to/from the xbox as i need. Does it even handle terabyte drives?

I have a network setup for my pcs already where I can view files on any of teh 3 pc on the network. All I did is use the same network name on Xbox in XBMC anf I could see any files in the network. I can stream any file from it. I did use the ip to router when settin it up. Only thing I had to do extra was allow it on NETWORK MAGIC since I have to to manage network settings.

Why do you need to rename it and why wold it be stuck there?
Put a 12volt fan mod on it and that wold cut the fan noise way down.
I have seen one case of a 1tb hdd running in an xbox and he had to use a sata drive and convert it to an ide, but he said it worked just fine.
