Hey nknave, great softmod Very Happy
I gave it a try on my 'box with my retail HDD, works like a charm! I especially like the 'foolproof' scripting.

I have just D/Led the mininova torrent, so I can help seed it.

Thanks again,
Roo

thanks for the reply nknave but I'm still not clear, I've already read both of the posts you recommended and one of them led to my original question
Quote:
make sure you power on the xbox with eject button so it loads retail mode, wait till it loads MS Dash, and put game disc in, after ingame sign in with an already made xbox live! gamer tag account. YOU CANNOT MAKE AN ACCOUNT AFTER YOUR MODDED.

does this mean i have to get on Live! at least once before I run the mod?

Post subject: restoring from backup went wrong...

I've got a modchipped box, which can be turned off for eg. XBL. I'm planning on helping my brother with softmodding his box, and therefore I'm testing on my box first.

Through SID 4 I backed up C:, installed the mod and tried removing it, however something went wrong, and I came to a rescuedash that reinserted the modded dash and the backup folder was lost!

Thanks to my chip, the box isn't f*cked up yet, but now the msdash won't connect to XBL, so I guess I still got some patched files on C. Any ideas on how to restore my C: files? And any ideas on how to check which version of the files I've got?

I was thinking along somehow extract xboxdash.xbe from the dashupdate.xbe from my Halo 2 disk, but I'm in the dark here...

Guess I'll make some superbackups for my next try...

Post subject: Boot to MSdash from EvolutionX dash question
Reply with quote

First of all, let me say the new SID 4 is truly a programming breakthrough, it works flawlessly! I've done several softmods, and this package by far is the best ever.
Now, I installed using the NON-Ndure dual-boot first. When I was done and had checked everything out, I noticed that if one uses the "Boot to MS dashboard" option via EvolutionX dash menu, it just boots right back to the same dash, so I experimented. I went to the file manager under the softmod installer (open tray method), and copied xboxdash.xbe to E:, renamed it to msdash.xbe and copied it back to C drive. I then rebooted the Xbox, went to the "Boot MS dash" option in Evox dash, and MSdash came up (note: red LED still on). I wanted to see if the C drive and been altered after the initial reboot by going back to the file manager..........and it had. MSdash.xbe was no longer present and xboxdash.xbe was a different file size. I rebooted again and MSdash still worked. I would like to know what process occurred after that first reboot with the file manipulation and size changes. I have since restored the C drive and installed the Ndure dual boot system - everything works great as well, I am still curious about this.

Also on a slightly related note - If I play "Call of Duty 2" head-to-head with my modded Xbox(off of HDD) and another non-modded Xbox, what will my network settings need to be set at on my modded Xbox to play head-to-head.

Well, let's put it this way, if you installed the Ndure, then you boot retail state with dvd tray open, and boot your softmod with power button, if you ran into the rescue dash, and lost all your other files, it's most probably that formated, or deleted files, SID 4 only save's it self, so if you run into rescuedash, it will only restore you dash, so it's safe enought and doesn't break your softmod.

Don't do the whole Halo 2, thing, if you really want to restore your C files, boot the game to install softmod, boot SID, and use FTP to ftp your MS dash, to real C drive, make sure you delete all other C drive files.

The thing is that your real MS Dash is hidden to load from msdash.xbe from a dual boot .xbe loader that patches back kernel to retail state but still being able to change directory and name of target. After you FULLY install softmod from SID, you boot to a first boot screen, that prompts you to press "A", this will install you MS Dash files, retail on virtual C partition, since your real C files are hidden, the aren't seen, and your ms dash will be in virtual partition, using retail files, and file names, so ms dash is to be loaded from xboxdash.xbe from any dash using true SID 4 install, taking the xboxdash.xbe from softmod files , and adding to virtual, to C with name of msdash.xbe will cause errors, cause it's the xonlinedash.xbe from special dash 4920, that loads the softmod.

So your solution, could be either, rename your xboxdash.xbe inside C after SID 4 is booted, and name it what ever your dash like's to load (msdash.xbe in your case), or edit your evox.ini to load xboxdash.xbe and not msdash.xbe like it's done by default.

Playing games with a modded xbox, and another modded, or unmodded xbox, doesn't need network fixes or anything, so just plug system link cable, or to your router, and have some fun, no networks settings are needed.

Anymore Questions?

Post subject: Softmod upgrade problem

Ok, thanks nknave for the help........ it all makes sense.

New problem....... I am upgrading a softmodded Xbox from SID 3 to SID 4 w/ndure dual boot. Everything went ok on the install after restoring the C drive and backup procedures, no errors. But now the retail mode keeps rebooting and the softmod mode will freeze on boot-up (just before the dash loads), but only if the network cable is plugged in. Can plug it in after the dash with no problem. Any ideas?

never heard of this, and you are the first........hmm let me think.

If this happens only when booting the retail state, it's probably that MS is trying to update dashboard.....which could mean, if new Dash=New Sofmod build, if it doesn't use current targets.

I'm not sure why you get this, i do suggest you power on in retail mode (open dvd tray), then go to settings, and where you choose to Auto Loggin to xbox live, dissable it, mb it's trying to access xbox live on mod boot, and trying to sign in on boot, can be causing this.

After you do that, you'll manually signin to xbox via your game, and not your MS DAsh.

Give it try and let me know how it goes.

This problem had started with the SID3 softmod, although I wasn't booting to MSdash per say. I had tried changing the evox.ini file to point to msdash.xbe via the evox dashboard, but it never worked, just kept rebooting. When this problem did not go away when upgrading to SID 4 and a clean load of MS dash 5960 on C drive, I knew something was up. To make a long story short, i scoured the E drive for clues of files that shouldn't or didn't need to be there, based off of a virgin off-line image. I did find some remnants of SID 3 in the UDATA sub-folders as well as some cache files, which where all deleted. I did another wipe of C drive and a clean install of MS dash 5960 and then the SID 4 ndure package............... and the problem was fixed! Wish I could remember the exact files I deleted, but by that point frustration had reigned supreme.

It hurts a little to see how much popular SID 4 is now compared to SID 3, but seriously I knew this was gonna be good as sooon as nknave started talking to me about it.

Full Kudos to Nknave for his effort here, there's a small bug which can happen with PAL which we're sorting out now (non-region 4 might have problems), but hopefully we're on top of it now.

So keep on using SID 4 and please post any bugs that you find (if any, it should be near perfect now).

Embarassed thx.

Please post any bugs.

Bugs known so far.

1) some PAL xboxes don't like virtual eeprom patching
-download new pal.zip in main post, and give it a try.

2) both evox, and unleashX try to run MS Dashboard from "msdash.xbe"
-forgot to fix it to load xboxdash.xbe, since it's in virtual partition, and file aren't modded.

3) some ppl can get a hang in the last part of the install of SID 4.
- this is not fixable, some xbox hdd's, and not only stock, can have issues when it comes to formatting virtual partitions. The thing is that it won't allow you to format virtual C, leading not having your MS Dash accessable from mod.

Some sort of a solution.

After you install SID 4, and patching of eeprom is done, you'll be at main menu, simply use the file manager, and do the following.

Delete E:\DASH\
Copy from E:\WAIT\ to E:\ , this will be evoxdash.xbe and it's config or ini file.

Delete E:\WAIT\.

Power off, and power back on.

Softmod will be like normal, just can't make use of C drive, nor MS Dash.

Ok heres the deal. I had SID 3 before, and i wanted to upgrade to 4. So i used AID 2.11 got rid of any SID 3 stuff, and reformatted teh C drive to install the 5960 dash.

I then cold booted and loaded SID w/ MechAssault. Followed steps accordignly 1)back up eeprom 2)back up dash 3)install softmod(dual boot Ndure for LIVE). I got thru the whole process, patch eeprom, then reboot with no disk. Press A after the reboot to complete the process.

Now heres my problem, my games, apps, homebrew, etc... are gone. And they were all in my F. In filemanager it says i have about 6 gigs free, but when i click the 'F' folder it shows nothing.

The only way i can access my F drive is if i load the gamesave, then use the filemanager from there. I read the other post saying SID 4 automatically enables F&G and it will show it if u have it, other wise it wont. Ive reinstalled many times, using other boot options but with all the same result. As before, i can only access F drive if i load thru the gamesave. Am i repeatedly doing something wrong?

Sorry for the insanley long post, just wanted to make it clear as to what is going on, if someone can help me i would greatly appreciate it.

PS-Great work on this release, features are incredible.

this really calls, for a more defined explanation of things, as far as i know, this shouldn't happen.

I had a softmodded xbox with a 120 gig using SID 2, i updated to SID 4, and everything was there intact.

I understand what you mean, but i dont' see why it happens.

Please explain with details, and also, tell me what's your dash installed, and it's optoins, as well as knowing if that dash is set to use F, having nkpatcher use them, but a dash not having them enabled, can lead you to see no files in it.

Hmmm... not sure how much more specific i can get. But lets see, I went thru the entire install process perfectly and ended up with the UnleashX dash in the root of E. I had backed up my Ava dash before the install so that i could transfer it back over afterwards. I placed that in E:/dash/.

Now since its using the same xml as before, all the settings are correct and should be seeing my games, apps, etc. If i use file manager, it shows "F Drive [6.12 gb free] (which is correct) but if i open the F drive there is nothing showing.

So i tried again from scratch but this time used unleashX, made sure that F was enabled and the paths for games and stuff were correct, but still nothing. But again the dash tells me i have ~6 gb left.

Did it all over again with Evox, with same results. Thats when i got the idea to use file manager when i had loaded the gamesave, and viola: I can see all that is in my f drive, and launch XBEs as well. When i load a dash from my f:/dashboards (i.e. - AnoDX) everyhting is normal. I can see what is in my F drive, i can load games and stuff.

Only when i boot to softmod state (pwr button) does the problem arise with my "ghost" F drive. Other than that, everything works fine.

Im not really sure what else i can describe, but if u dont mind personally helping u can find me on AIM--> DaWunNunico.

Thanks, and sorry for the trouble.
