I have to ask again about your xbox HDD: What did you mean by "wasnt working right"? Getting the old Xbox HDD to work is the only way I see to recover the xbox, unless...
... well unless eeproms are similar on Xboxes of the same version, but I don't know about that. Or are they unique?
Anyways, I'd try to get the old HDD working again, then hotswap and recover... I'd really give it a couple more tries before going out and buying a new one (especially with 360 around the corner ).
