Hey, a friend at work said his box died so I am trying to help and get it going again. I have rebuilt computers for years but haven't delt with specific voltage issues or anything.

Anyway this is the first time dealing with a console and I am having a hard time figuring this out without voltage testing equipment.

No idea what the mods are on this unit so I have attached some pics.

The problem is it will not turn on at all. The only thing I get out of it is a very faint click when you plug it in. The sound comes from the power supply board and you can only hear it when the case is off and your ear is some what close. To me, it sounds like a normal sound that I shouldn't be concerned about.

I have pulled it a part and don't see any burn or melt signs, I cleaned up the fans and redid the thermal paste on the chip because the heat sync was abnormally loose when I released it.

The power button seems to work fine, as in it isn't jamming. The case does have a Protect feature on it which I was told #2 was suppose to be pushed in and Protect pushed in for it to work. I have tried any combo I can think of and it still doesn't help. You can see them in the case picture along the left front of the panel. So I am thinking it is most likely isolated to the power supply or a faulty power button.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

The red thing in the first pic on the left side is an xbox modchip. So the console is considered 'hardmodded' for future reference.

I'm not one to quote for console repairs, but if I had to take a guess. Maybe the power supply needs to be replaced? It is possible to use an ATX supply instead, should replacement be necessary.

Does your friend have any other power supplies? Maybe you could switch a working one with another from the broken console to test.

This is just me speculating. I would wait for someone more experienced to answer.

Thanks for posting!

That Xbox is a V1.0 from the pictures i see.
Remove & check the back of the power supply where the AC jack is and re-solder the pins
as this is also a common problem.
V1.0 do have problems with there power supply's not starting up as
I have experienced it a lot,
& with one power supply i can't get parts to fix.
so a power supply from a 1.1 will also work.
You can also buy an adapter to make 1.2 - 1.5 power supply's work on 1.0 -1.1 Xbox's or buy a universal power supply to fit all models.
There are 110 & 240VAC model's, get the right voltage for your Xbox.

I was given a US V1.6b Xbox 110VAC that didn't turn on,
Someone had plugged it into 240VAC and blew it's fuse,
So i converted the power supply to 240VAC and PAL & now reads AU PAL games so i installed a 320GB HDD & softmoded it with SPPV's SID5 Babylon installer.

Llamma is a good site to look at for parts and things.
