If you convert the controller port to a usb tip and format the hdd to fatx it will work but i dont think it can see anything over like 4gb.

The transfer rates would be really slow since its an external HDD.

usb2 external drives are plenty fast, the drive wouldnt be the bottleneck, its very fast on my pc

but i guess the xbox only has usb1 like the ps2 right?

looks like i'll have to stick to the network storage

Yes you can use a external drive using the usb trick but it only runs usb1 speed and it only works like a giant memory card you cant use to play games off of but you can save files to it good for meddors to transfer files like dash board and such around i also believe it would be good for storing sound tracks. If you want good game and movie storage go with network storage device its your best bet.

If you use the linksys what was the plan, to run it into the laptop then use the xbox to the pc network to connect to it?

If thats the plan it wold work better then a network drive.

The plan with the slug was to have it hooked up to 2x 500gb external usb2 freecom drives with all my media, and having the slug connected cat5 to the router.

xbox would be wired to router too, and my laptop would be on wireless

that way the xbox and laptop can access the drives independently and when i have something big to transfer to the drives i just connect cat5 to the router or unplug usb from slug and plug into laptop for transfer.

sound good?

make sure u have 7200 rpm harddrives, and preferably sata connection. If ur using an ide with a 5400 rpm drive then its going to be really slow. Sad

i dont think an IDE 5400rpm drive is slower than LAN, and i sometimes stream from my laptop's 5400rpm drive without problems.

i think its going to be something else that causes the bottleneck

Lan and a harddrive is two seperate things. If u have a 7200 rpm harddrive streaming over a 100mbs router to ur laptop that has a 5400 rpm its going to take time. If u stream the same size data over a 100mbs router to two harddrives thats 7200 rpm, the tranfer rate will be much faster. Lan will and can cause a bottleneck, but it wont be the only culprit. U have to take in consideration of ur harddrives. Wireless will be slower, especially if ur router is like accross ur house. Brick walls slow down the frequncy between the router and the client ( ur laptop). To speed things up or decrease the bottlenecking invest in harddrive thats sata connected and that is 7200 rpm or 10000 rpm. U can never fully remove bottlenecking from the network. But u can decrease significantly.

i know that, im just saying that i think the HDD can do faster transfers than a LAN connection, so if you are sending things over a network, chances are its the network that is the slow factor, not the RPM of the drive
