Post subject: placing 120gb HD, udma 5 or 6 & what about drive letters

I've copied c and d to pc with flashget, cause when I get my spare 120GB hd from home, I'm going to prep it with xboxhdm & put it in xbox,

about placing new hd, some of my hd are udma-5 and not 6, will the xbox use 5 or 6, cause I've got the choice of a Maxtor 120gb that works under windows at 6, and a WD that runs at udma 5 (will maybe check if that can be fixed, cause my 250gb samsung drive could be set to 6 with a samsung ms dos tool... why does samsung set it to 5 ???)

as long as I don't go over 120 gb I don't need a different install than for the standard hd? or is there a better installation for larger HD? (have AID 4.01 and AID 4.10 Lite),

also can somebody explain what the other drive letters are for? can they be cleaned up or something or should they never be touched,

thanks in advance,

Kind regards Wink

You can check the list of hdds on this site that work with the tab under the scroll at the top of the page whare it has harddrives. Wink
In the set up i wold go with larg hdd setup to be safe and that will give you an F drive.
The drive letters are just added for handleing the space in a large hdd most of the new space wold go to F drive, whare in a largwe hdd (like over 300gb) it will add a G drive since the data will currupt if the space gets too big.

thx wes !

have the xbox hd in my hand: jumper is set to cable select?
will google around if that's normal or necessary...

I've checked my 120gb drive with AIDA32, I can see there that Security Mode is checked, so it's lockable Razz

Regards

not so lucky after all Sad

after I enter xboxhdm I get an error:
"looking For Cd-rom In /dev/hd" (tons of them),

googled and someone says that this means that this linux distribution isn't compatible with your hardware... (was solved by using different pc...)

my mobo: Asus M2N32-Sli deluxe, only have 1 ide, the rest is sata, even tried sata to ide converter for hd and dvdrom, no difference...

hopefully it will work with my MSI K7N2 Delta-L mobo at home, can try that this weekend... pffff Rolling Eyes

I've searched a little:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=594719

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=351166

the CD boots, I press 1, but then when I type xboxhd I get this (copied this text from 2nd link):

Looking for CD-ROM in /dev/hda
Looking for CD-ROM in /dev/hdb
Looking for CD-ROM in /dev/hdc
((all the way down to /dev/hdt))
Linux CD not found! Insert it and try again...
(I've copied this text from 2nd link)

quite some people have this problem, also think it's hardware related...

well it wasn't easy... everything thing that could go wrong, went wrong,

but I made it! Razz

I unlocked my original xbox hd with configmagic,

than I cloned disks with Winhex,

then I locked the hd with hdlock, but atapdw showed that it was frozen (apparently my bios did not allow the lock commando...), so I had to put power connector in after bios loaded drives, than it finally worked!

I've formatted the f drive, now I have 106xxx mb free space on f,
so that looks pretty correct (total of 111GB), but I don't have g drive,

writing aid4.10 now & will uninstall mod and reinstall it,

grtz & thx for all help,

take care!

Regards

just some other info:

my original HD:
- 768 kb buffer,
- probably 5400 rpm (some say it's better to not go faster, because for example a 7200 rpm drive produces more heat and could cause overheating, I so far have no problems with that, I even configure XBMC to target temp. 45C, then fan operates silently (very loud fan on my Crystal v1.6 xbox...),
- jumper was set to cable select, but works also as master,

have a nice one!

bye

also the original xbox hard disk (Western Digital) was ATA-100 (udma-5),
would the xbox motherboard support ATA-133 (udma-6), or will a ATA-133 work at ATA-100 in the xbox?

thanks,

Regards
