Hey all, I was attempting to make a backup DVD today on my new External DVD DL Burner. I purchased three RiDATA Blank DL Disks only to find out my current DL Burner won't recognize the disks.
From what I gather, I need to update my firmware for this drive. The problem is, it's an external drive. Should that matter? And, has anyone ever flashed firmware to a drive before?? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I was told that Verbatim's will be read by and DVD DL burner so I can always go that route. I am just trying to salvage 38.00!!

All I can say is be careful..
You should have a model number for your Drive, just make sure the BIOS you use matches that.

My model number is MD-8XDVD9-EXT Made by MadDog Multimedia.
It is an external USB 2.0 Dual Layer Burner.
I can't find any info on how to upgrade my firmware for this product so it will recognize RiDATA DL Disks..
Furthermore, doesn't the drive have to be an IDE Master or Secondary for you to do this??
I am slightly confused on that issue to. Thanks all! _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

You would more than likely need a special program from the manufacturer to flash it then, as you are correct, most drive flashings are done by ide.
About the best I can suggest is try their official site and googling...
Sorry I can't help out much more than that.

No problem, just thout I'd throw it out there to see if anyone had any info.
I have found a site called crdinfo.com and made some posts and found some really good info there.
It seems that I do indeed need to update my firmware from 2.05 to 2.06 and they are going to walk me through it.
I also found that I should be able to use Verbatim DL Disks without a firmware upgrade, so I am off to best buy to purchase their solution pack that indeed includes one DL disk...unfortunately, I have to get 8 DVD+R's and 1 DVD RW with it...but I am sure I'll find a use for them.
I'll just pawn off the RiDATA disks that I got to someone who can use them.

Yeah, someone directed me to an .exe that autoflashed my drive to the new firmware, but unfortunately....it still won't read my media.
I'm taking this one back for a different one. I will have a fight on my hands as I have already removed the UPC label for the rebate and I know they will tell me that I can't get a refund.
I called their tech support and you know what they told me to do?
The told me to take the external drive apart so I can remove the drive itself install it in my PC as an internal drive. That way, it would be connected to an IDE cable and I would be able to flash through DOS.
I was like, why the F#@$ do you think I bought an external drive...BECAUSE I DIDNT WANT TO TAKE MY PC APART, let along a friggin external burner!! Dude, I blew up!
Luckily, I ran across someone on the net that knew how to upgrade firmware for USB Devices!
What a fiasco. Here's a warning for everyone....stay away from MadDog Multimedia DL Burners... I'm going back to my other one!
