Hey, just a quick question here. I'm going to softmod an Xbox for a friend, and I thought I might use the opportunity to upgrade my own HDD. That way I could sell him the 160GB that's in mine and buy a new one for myself.
What would change in this tutorial if I was using a hard drive that had already been locked and installed in an Xbox? Would I just have to go to the Linux tools and type "unlockhd -a" between steps 8 and 9? Thanks for your help.

Given that you have the original Eeprom for that drive, yes, that would work.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I do. I made a backup when I first softmodded it. I have E:\Backup\Eeprom\eeprom.bin. That's it, right? Is there any chance that I've since then accidentally overwritten it with a fake Eeprom? Thanks.

The actual Eeprom.bin backup is somewhere in your Tdata or Udata...I'm not exactly sure which, lol...Go looking =P it doesnt take long.
But yeah, Backup\Eeprom.bin might be it, but i know that's not where mine was backed up to =P So i guess either would work, but whatever

OK, I just had another thought here...
I saved my original XboxHDM boot disc. Can I unlock my old hard drive with that, then turn off my computer and prepare/lock it with the boot disc I make for my friend's Xbox? That seems like it should work... but usually when I think something seems like it should work, that's a pretty good indicator that it won't. Thanks.

Sounds like it should work =P
Besides, what's the harm in trying, should it not work? =P
Good luck

Well, other than messing up the hard drive and being unable to recover it... nothing! I guess I'll try it and see what happens. Just to clarify here... the "Build a new Xbox HD from scratch" command formats and partitions the hard drive, right? So it shouldn't matter if there's anything on it? Thanks again.

Yup, it formats everything, don't worry about whatever is on there.
Remember, though, the eeprom MIGHT be in the Tdata or Udata folders, with the Exploit files! make sure you have a backup from there as well, before attempting anything so you dont have a paperweight if something goes wrong!

Wait... isn't the Eeprom on the XboxHDM CD? So I shouldn't need to back it up again, should I? Or am I missing something? Once again, thanks for all your help.

It's the original XboxHDM boot disc I made from the retail HDD of my Xbox. Should work, yeah?
