Does anyone know if there is an addon for XBMC, or a separate app, that allows you to rip DVDs to .avi on the xbox?

I would use my computer but it's far too slow to be of any real use.

Thanks
Cueball

Definately, DVD2Xbox will do the trick. I've ripped numerous DVD's using that program. It isn't too fast, but it isn't as slow as using your computer to do the ripping.

no it won't. no Xbox app will rip and convert a DVD to avi. DVD2Xbox will only rip the DVD

No it won't do the avi but it can rip the DVD. That's all I was addressing.
Perhaps I should have been clearer on that.
I guess I am now.
So what does it convert in to when ripped?

It's been awhile since I've actually ripped a DVD, but I believe it just rips the files directly from the DVD, which would allow you to just throw a blank dvd in and burn the contents of the dvd, if that makes sense. Maybe I'm wrong, can't quite remember....

A little reading shows it creates a .vob file just like I get when I rip info off my DTIVO. So he'd need to pull it over to his computer and convert it from .vob to avi I would presume. Makes sense now.

Dvd2Xbox doesn't convert anything, it just rips the raw files from disks to the harddrive. Xbox dvd drive also reads at only 4x, so its not gonna rip a DVD faster than your pc unless your pc is rather crappy. xbox= 733MHz processor, 64 MB RAM, 4x Dvd-Rom.

If thats the case he's better off using dvd decrypter. Save himself the transfer from xbox to pc then back to xbox.

That's true, but once he transfers it over to his pc to convert it, he can just use XBMC to stream the video to his xbox, no transfer needed! HAHAHA!

OK. This damn thread will go on for ever.

No there is no way to Convert files thru the dash.

You are a VIP member. Go to the VIP sectinos PC/APPS, get the DVD rip pack (just about everything you need to convert. Even a shrinker for other dvd to dvd necessity)

Then go to Sourceforge.net, Get Gordian Knot. This is the main backbone, the other stuff is essential as well.

Fill in Program locations in the Options (Gordian is a one stop converter.)

Then either fill in your Specs for the DVD. Or, I use this tutorial, which is one of the best I have found so far...

http://www.rita.lt/guides/GKnot_DVDtoAVI.htm

Then, rip it to Xvid Specifications, (quicker and smaller, as well as a free source encoder).

You should now have an .avi (after a couple of hours of encoding) that is an Xvid (divx quality, but once again, free source).

Then FTP to your HDD.

The DVD2Xbox method takes up a whole 5 gbs or something mad like that.

Shark...keep your fin outta my pool Twisted Evil HAHAHAHA

Yes, it is a lot easier. I used to settle for this. However, its pretty quick when you know what to do really quick, you can rip and encode in 4 hours and 45 mins! lol.
