You would need the old Xbox to unlock the drive.

The hard drive is "married" to the xbox it came from so there is no way to unlock it without the original xbox. Since it's a standard hard drive, you should be able to format it new again, but you can't simply unlock the drive and use it with another xbox.

By the way JustAnOrdinaryPanda
hotswap is a way to unlock the hd without a eeprom.
Honestly, I don't know that you can format it while it's locked.
I am trying to do some research now in the forums but I think the last time I saw this issue the hard drive became a big paper weight.

Try this as suggested by shortacid.

Looks like the key is the eeprom, without that... it's over.

Here's the quote from the link...
"Ok.. You cannot b/c the Hard Drive (HDD) will be locked to your motherboard.

You would need to get his eeprom and flash it to yours..Now, remember eeproms are version specific, don't flash another version's eeprom.

Take his eeprom, get the program in the VIP downloads section, Liveinfo by Yoshihiro, edit that eeprom (make sure you make an original backup as well, make a backup of your eeprom and put that on your computer.)

Then, you can just quickly and easily use config magic to flash a new eeprom to your mobo (his eeprom info) lock the HDD and then reflash the eeprom on your xbox to your original.

Remember you have a feature on the x3 to back up the eeprom and restore it later. But also make constant backups, if not you could have a paperweight for the xbox.

Thats the process I went thru to UNLOCK a locked HDD from another motherboard I had the eeprom of."
