My situation doesn't quite fit the common support scenarios. I have tried searching the site but have been unable to resolve my issue. I would be grateful for any assistance. I have also posted this question as the OzXodus site.

Hardware:

Xbox - 1.0 or 1.1
Xenium 3 - OS 1.1
Hard Drive - 8GB WD - Locked
DVD Drive - Samsung

What Have I Done:

Installed Xenium 3 mod chip

Installed Xenium OS 1.1

Booted Xebian linux via CD (Memorex Cd-R)

Installed Xebian linux (1.0.2) to F: on the Xbox. Why did I pick F: on an 8G drive? - pilot error... Just a stupid user mistake!! Backup - No - it was late and I was tired... yet another rookie mistake...

Once I did this I could no longer boot the original bios - it would come up with error code 16 and instruct me to call customer service.

I can still boot to Xenium OS and can still run Xebian from both CD-R and hard drive.

Figured that Slayer 2.5 distro would be useful due to the various disk management options available.

I loaded and flashed the bios as instructed and received the expected messages. When I attempt to boot from the bios, I got an xbox splash screen (no dash) and then it freezes. I never get to the Exox dashboard.

I have tried multiple slayer 2.5 distros, different burners and different media. Fortunately, CD's are cheap... Smile

My goals:

Recover from my errors and get my xbox working for xbox games. I am not concerned about xbox live.

Reinstall Xebian or another linux distro without corrupting the drive.

Use my xbox for Xbox games and as a media center in the family room.

Do more cool stuff with the xbox once it is operational... Smile

Error code 16 is dashboard specific, obviously. So we need to check and figure out why you cannot even boot up the MS Bios. Chances are what is happening is your machine is pointing to the wrong area or the file has been changed/moved.

I am not too familar with the Linux and what goes with it, but will look into it for you. I don't know who here is running linux, but I know once some of the senior members login tonight they will help out too.

Hang in there, and if you solve it before we get a chance to reply, please let us know what went wrong.

Hang in there, help is on the way

I am looking through an application that I have called xboxrepairguide and it has complete linux install instructions. However, probably for legality reasons they are only describing the install with the Cromwell bios, at time of writing it was the Version 2.29.

Again, I will keep checking here to see if something rings a bell.

Here's some help with Xebian:

You can install it to your Xbox Hard Drive without corrupting anything...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Following information taken from the readme of Xebian 1.0.2, comments by me made in blue)

If you have burned the install image (ie: 1.0.2.iso) boot it on your XBox and wait until the graphical environment is started. At this point you have the choice between an local installation via usb keyboard, xpad or using the network. (Note: We're not interested in network install, just a simple install using a usb keyboard and usb mouse/xpad).

For a local installation:
Become the superuser. You can make this with:
su -
or
ssh root@localhost
For the login use the username root and the password xbox for login.
The next step is to start the installation program. It is called XBOXLinuxInstall . Here you can select the installation method.

"Installing XBOXLinux inside the Game Partition":

This installs linux in an file on the e: partition. If you select this you will be asked for the filesize of the swap and the rootfs file. The maximum filesize for the rootfs is 2000 MB.

Now the installation begins. This take some time. Wait until the next dialog apears. After the copy of the files is finished the installer ask you some basic questions of the networksetup. Now you can reboot the XBox and burn the right bootcd. (Note: With EvoX installed you only need to make a link to the XBE file on E Drive to boot)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To start it (when you get EvoX installed again) just make a link to where Xebian is, like so:

Item "Xebian Linux","e:\Debian\default.xbe"

Put this in your evox.ini file (located on your C Drive of your Xbox). Now, when editing that file you have to be careful where you put that line, otherwise you'll have even more problems. Look for this bit of code in that file:

[Menu]

Section "Root"{

Item "Xebian Linux","e:\Debian\default.xbe"

Insert the line under there (like the line shown in orange), and presto it all should be fine.

One last warning, make sure you have your In Game Reset (IGR) turned OFF while booting Xebian, otherwise it won't boot properly.

Hope that helps...

Hi Guys

1. I dont understand how a linux install could affect the XBOX MOTHERBOARD BIOS.? [TSOP] (it wont)

2. How could you install linux to the F:\ Partition when you have a standard HARD DRIVE.?

Anyway, Your TSOP Mainboard Xbox bios is located on the motherboard of your xbox and could never be flashed unless you soldier the two points of the motherboard required to be done before flashing it.

Your modchips bios is kept onboard the modchip.. You can flash your modchip anyway you want.

My guess.. (guess with the info i have).

1. Burn EVOX to a CDR with your network settings.
2. Then try and boot EVOX from a CDR/DVD-r and get a ip address..
3. FTP into your XBOX (c: DRIVE) boot drive and check it out.. You are probably missing the main boot file..

main boot file: xboxdash.xbe

stick with it mate as we are all here to help.. Ask away! Smile

DJB,

Great answer on how to install linux.. Couldnt have written it better myself.. Smile btw DJB Ill be coming over this week definately..

Thanks for the help.

As instructed, I have attempted to install Xebian in the gamesave partition. I go through the guided setup (location, network settings) and then receive the following error messages:

/sbin/XBOXSetup: /mnt/etc/network/interfaces: No such file or directory
/sbin/XBOXSetup: /mnt/etc/hosts: No such file or directory
/sbin/XBOXSetup: /mnt/etc/hostname: No such file or directory
chroot: cannot execute /usr/lob/xbox/rc_update.sh: No such file or directory
swapoff: /mnt/debian/swap: No such file or directory
Happy Penguin

As for the following question:

2. How could you install linux to the F:\ Partition when you have a standard HARD DRIVE.?

The install routine did not fail even though there is no F: (as far as I understand) on a standard hard drive. I selected option 2 and installed it to unused space. What I suspect is that the space is not unused and I screwed up the E: partition instead. Of course I am not an Xbox guru so maybe this is wrong.

Is it possible that I have corrupted or overwritten the E partition with the earlier Xebian install?? Just wondering....

Any ideas on how to proceed from here?

Thanks,
Kevin

OK, in regards to your first question I don't know why that did that. I'm not a Linux expert, I'm only someone who tried installing it myself.

For your second question, that's rather interesting. Maybe the Linux installer doesn't detect the drvies available, instead it just gives you the options available to that program.

More then likely when you did that it has corrupted your whole drive, but I'm not sure on how much. E would be damaged I'm thinking...

Thank for the help. It turns out the I was flashing a bios.bin that would not work. Once I selected a different bios everything worked as advertised.

I now have Xbox Media Center running. My wife loves it although I will need to clean up the interface a bit. Smile

Once again, thanks for all the help. It was invaluable and appreciated.

Kevin
