Lets see, spend money on an Xbox then on a chip and hope the install goes well or buy a cheap game and softmod? Seems like the softmod would be the obvious choice but I'm pretty new to Xbox and don't know what the pros and cons are. Anybody care to spell them out for me?

TIA,
Bryan

I think it's a personal choice thing. I went softmodding first because I saw it as a stepping stone into the modding world. Kinda to get my feet wet. I'm probably gonna buy a chip within the next couple of months, because it's fun to work with my xbox. Not all chips are hard time to install. You can get solderless adapters or combo kits that are pretty basic to install for about 70 bucks, such as the Xenium SPICE. I've put that chip combo into 2 of my friends boxes and haven't had a single problem. Going with a modchip though, gives you a lot more things at your disposal, like the Xenium OS, which I am a big supporter of. It has a lot of tools built into it, that you would normally have to get from somewhere else, such as AID 2.0.

basically just the ease of being able to turn teh modchip on and off for Xbox Live aswell as LCD's and other bells and whistles. well theres also the part how a modchip will recover most peoples softmod mistakes that leave them with a useless box. how many times have you seen, "your fucked, get a modchip"? i've personally seen it to many times to count. i got a modchip but i have never installed it :p i have a TSOP flash but i know the chip is there if i should ever need it (or eventually get the second xbox i've been wanting for months now)

if your a bit worried about doing a softmod then don't be, i was a little worried about it too, but as long as you follow all of the instructions correctly you should be able to mod ur box in about 3 minutes (yes i know its very quick and easier than i thought it would be), i went with the softmod option because i didn't feel confitable with opeing my xbox or getting it opened, also with the softmod, you can completly remove it the mod and change your xbox back to its original state if you change your mind or decide to use xbox live.
the choice is yours

i personaly think the tsop is the
cheapest and most durable.
i do a lot of traveling about with
my xbox hub sesions and what not,
chipped xboxs arn't quite so durable
even header pin installs can work
loose in my experience.
shame you can't tsop every xbox
though.
If you can get your head round
how to get a working exploit into
your gamesaves and you back up
your xbox data to a pc or another
xbox BEFORE you install anything
like dashboards, softmods or
whatever.
Best bet is to buy a cheap second
hand xbox and play with that,
the older the better if you don't
have a chip.

3 minutes? more likely be 3
hours on your first go.

AusDude, I suspect you did your homework first, then did the mod. A lot of folks see what's going on, read about all the cool things a mod provides, dive in without gaining enough knowledge and VLOOM... (no that's not a word) it's over and the Xbox is fragging, flashing, groaning and spitting. In otherwords, you did well padawan. Wink

Yes yes! i agree, Alot of people dont read up on the process of how to softmod, and softmods are dangerous things to do- so many things that could go wrong.
But onto the main topic here, i preference Mod-chips over Softmod. Dont get me wrong, softmods are good- I actully started off doing softmods (first mod EVER!) and ive softmodded over 70+ xbox's here. All with good results, but its when the get home and tweak around with things they REALLY SHOULDENT and then they come back, blame me for there FRAG crisis-i try to fix it for them, but if i cant (AKA: error 16) i just tell them thats one of the things you have to consider before you softmod, and i always tell a customer- if you mess it up after i give it to you, im not liable for any damage done to it.-
Mod-chips are much more safe (there so many ways to get your system back up and running if you get a small error, its not even funny!) you can expand into bigger hard drives that couldent be locked on a Softmodded xbox, annd plus- chipped system get all the cool little gizmos and features (LCD screen support, Xbox live support ETC.)

Yep you did well
I`ve done the procsess loads of times
now and i still have trouble with
corrupt files.

you might not have had this
but i`ve spent a whole afternoon
downloading new exploits after
every single one i had stored on
my pc became corrupted AND every
new one i downloaded became corrupt
upon contact with my pc.

in the end
i found one that i could use that
was on a old stock hdd that i had
kicking around.

crash04 is right, it's strictly preferential. I've done two softmods (flawlessly, I might add), one on a 1.6 and one on a 1.4. But I've also got a chipped box for when I want to run different Bioses, like a debug or somesuch. Also, the Xenium is great for HDD upgrading. One button and you're done. Just my two cents.

Lolol !!! Laughing All these good peoples forgot to explain you a ''little thing''Rolling Eyes ...if you're an XBox Live addict...forget the softmod and go buy a modchip...because softmod avoid connecting on Live.

I'ts the bigger difference between a chipmod and a softmod...accessing or not to the live.

For my part,i have a chipmoded xbox but if i have to buy another one i would softmod it because (it's so fast and simple to do) i'm not playing on live anyway. But the best reaon is : it done the job for reading all kinds of back-up and customize the apps and settings of the box.
