Yeah, installing 80mm fan is always fun...lol.

thats the first reason I bought a dremel. I was using a rotozip for awhile, it worked fine. Actually in some instances it worked better, but was not as portable. Much larger tool.

ive installed 80mm fans before but i had no idea what was making my fan in my box with the swaped drives run at about half power. that was very bad considering that the dvd drive has to sit almost directly on top of the psu. i found that i actually had to knock some off of the top of the back of the case so i could get full clearence. the reason why i realized this was because when i was trying to add the 60mm fan to my slim box that was exactly what it needed to fit it properly. to make a long story short, ummm good job, and if this ever happens just hit the top with the dremel.

I was wondering if it would be better to use this or just plug the fan(cpu) into its original location? If I were to use this would I still get the options of changing my fan speeds or would it just run at full speed all the time? Thanks for the response, much appreciated. Smile

You definitely want to use the 12v fan upgrade kit to get full use of the fan. You will still be able to adjust the speed. But, if you are just plugging the fan into the regular spont, you are not putting your new fan to good use.

if you plug the fan in the spot you need to just take the ground wire and solder it to the metal caseing, you still will have full speed and be able to change it, thats what will make it run 12v. had min ein for at least 11 months and still no prob.

the fan plug on the xbox mb is 12v with a 5v ground, giving the fan a 7v to run. if you ground the fan on metal (the metal sheilding for instance) you are unrestricting the ground causing the fan to run at the full 12v. thats alot of work if you have a molex conector and you still have room for it, haha.

So just to be sure I have to snip the black wire on the fan and solder it to the metal caseing. So this will only leave the red wire plugged into the original position while black is grounded to metal frame??? Please tell me if this is correct or not. Thanks.

BTW using the molex connector(or WeverTF its called) the fan only runs at full speed and ya can't change it. Sad

yes, that is correct. either way its not going to be changed from 12v, back to seven. you can add a switch so that it does, but ive never looked into that before. its not wise to run the 80mm fan at half speed though as its made to run at 12v. it could possibly make more heat if you let the larger fan run slower then if you let it run at the full 12v.

Yeah got her done but still not able to change fan speed (using a dash Unleash, evox, xbmc, etc.) Not that it matters but the retail fan doesn't usually run at full speed which sucked becuase i like to keep the box nice and cool. BTW what temp does your guy's box run at (after being on for at least 20min)mine stays at 45°C for both CPU and MB. here are a couple more pics of the solder.
