hi hi,
ok, well, i have read every post here on doing this and i THINK im making a bit of progress, but i seem to have hit a roadblock =<
going to the workgroups[smb] in xbmc i used to get the good ol nt status blah blah blah...
now i get 'invalid computer name'
so, i added my computer name behind the ip:port in the xml file under 'file shares' and then i got 'access denied'
i am so f'n confused now it isnt even funny... i went out yesterday and got a router specifically so i could do this and now i want to throw both the router and my box out the window... but i wont... at least not just yet : \
hope someone here is smarter than i am.
cheers

[edit] oh, and BTW, i can access my xbox from my computer and i have static IPs on the xbox and computer... dunno if that will help me get help, but i figured it may =>

Hi Snuffy,

Its been quite a while since ive played with sharing and XBMC but i thought it was as simple as setting up a SHARE FOLDER on your computer and then filling out your .xml file like you have.

One thing i would do to start is disable all your firewalls and INTERNET SECURITY apps until you get it working.. Smile

Basically right click any folder on your COMPUTER and choose to share it.. Give it a NAME and then choose Apply.. Now on your xbox just fill our your pc's info.

COMPUTERNAME, USERNAME/PASSWORD etc etc. Then reboot your xbox.
Try to find a share..

hope that helps. if not just reply again and me or another member will help you more.

i think if your running WinXP just run the network wizard with the xbox on. and setup it up that it conencts through a gateway (i think/hope) hope. i think the workgroup may also need to be named the default name, MSHOME (again, i think, i am just going from memory) Hope you get it

edit: and make sure to share the drive/folder on your pc Smile

thanks all for your replies =>

i tried running the network wizard, but that didnt work...
i do have a folder set to shared
my workgroup is called (cleverly...) workgroup
however maybe i dont get how to find my username/password for the computer.... i know what my computer name is, but the rest i am lost on =<
i tried shutting down zone alarm, nothing...
i tried adding the IP of my xbox to zone alarms truseted area... again, nothing.... grrrr
do i need to add all this info to every instance of the 'workgroup [smb]' in the xml file??? cuz i only added it to 'my file shares', but that is the only place i am trying to access my computer from in xbmc... so... ? ? ? ? ?

If you have a folder shared on your PC fly over to your Xbox and open XBMC

Select the SMB shares under your video, pictures, music, etc.. or whatever and press the white button

Erase all of that crap thats there except for the "smb://"
right after that type your computer name.
Ex. Mine is "smb://Cobalt"

If XBMC's IP settings are set correctly and your Firewall or other precautions are disabled it will list every foulder on your PC that is shared.

If that works you should be fine and ready to tweak. From the same menu of the white button you can rename that "bookmark" without entering into the .xml file. You can also change the path (once you know the shares work) to go directly to the media folder.
I.E. If your shared foulder is "Pictures" regardless of it physical path on your pc the address (if it was on my PC) to it over SMB shares would be...
smb://Cobalt/Pictures

After you know all of this works slide into your internet security program and put your Xbox's IP as a trusted IP, that way you can keep your firewall up without having to run to your PC every time you have to watch a movie.

Hope that helps!

i read the tut that your recommended as well before i first posted here... many times over, so i have no clue what to try next =<
if it helps, im soft modded with ltools and im pretty sure im using xbmc 1.1
sorry to be such a retard n stuff...

[edit] ok, nothing happened with the white button in 'my files', but in 'my videos' it gave me the nt status bs again, then auto tried to imdb query... stayed on that screen for a bit, then popped up a keyboard looking type thing... i am so confused.... : \

I was using XBMC Jan 15 2005 Build

Yeah I used the whit button in videos screen, htough it could be black Razz
One button goes to the Playlists and one brings up a submenu for editing bookmarks.

As for IMDb thet stands for Internet Media database. Its a search engine for finding movies and stuff kind of like CDDB, Im still tryin to figure out how to use that one so dont feel so bad Smile

You can get the newest version of XBMC from the usual places Razz
If you dont know how to get to the usual place I may be able to find a link to a link that tells you how to get there

Did you change the xbmc.XML file?

All shared smb links had to look like this for mine to work:
'<path>smb://home;administrator:1234/</path>'

Then you have to set that link up in each section (pics, music, etc)

Its magic:

Gut just incase it wasnt magic, check your XboxMediaCenter.xml file and see what the value is set to. That way youll know for the futute. Or incase something happens to that file.
