I've got a v. 1 that freezes up all the time, no matter what game is in, and I thought I saw somewhere that there was a download to fix this, but I would have to sign up for something. Am I wrong?

I assume you mean game saves so the ones that were on it when I got it were: Azurik-Rise of Perathia, Bruce Lee: QOD, Hitman 2: Silent Assin, Midtown Madness, Sega GT 2002, Test Drive, T.H.U.G., and True Crime. The ones I put on it are: Counter-Strike, DOA:3, DOA:XBV, Halo 2, Elder scrolls 3: Morrowind, Ninja Gaiden, Rayman 3, Samurai Warriors, Spiderman 2, StarWars:KOTOR, Terminator 3:ROTM, and T.H.U.G. 2 along with some songs I added to the ones already on it. Total songs:51.

No sir. The bios is the item on the chip that tells the chip what it's capable of doing. Example: M$ bios allows Xbox to play XBlive, play original games. Another bios such as the M8 will allow the Xbox to play backup games, dashboards other than the M$ dash like Avalaunch and a lot more. Does that help? Have you modded this Xbox or is it stock? I am guess stock.
To answer your question. NO, there is no update to fix a stock box from locking up, but all is not lost yet.
Are you getting any type of error message, either text or flashing lights? Does it act like it is having trouble reading the game DVD's?

I haven't modded it, but the pads on the bottom are missing, so mabey the previous owner modded it. Pertaning to messages, I occasionallly get a "your xbox can't read this disk, make sure the disk is not scrached or dirty. That isn't verbatim, but I don't remember the exact wording

But thats just one game. Other times the xbox will just freeze up and a odd non-stop buzzing sound will start. If it's any help, it's also very slow, the circular green light it half dead, there are two wierd noises it makes when running, a high pitched barely perceptable noise like a the noise a tv makes when turned on, and a lower pitched louder noise that's from the fan, I guess. Does that help at all?
