What is Grouper?
Grouper is a new Windows based application that allows users to share their personal media within private groups. Grouper uses P2P technology to connect you directly to your friendsí hard drives where you can share large media files in a safe, encrypted environment. Grouper is a simple install and requires no firewall reconfiguration.
How does it work?
All interaction with your friends and family happens within your groups. Start your own group or accept an invitation to join a friends group. Once inside a group, you can stream music, download personal files, and IM/chat in a private setting with other group members.
Okay, how much does it cost?
During the beta period, Grouper will be free. We expect to always offer a free version of our product. Eventually, we will offer a premium version of Grouper with new features and services that will likely require payment. Again, our ambition is to keep the basic functionality of Grouper free forever. More information will be provided once our beta program is complete.
What protocols does Grouper use?
Grouper user its own P2P network protocol and is built over TCP/IP.
Does Grouper expose any of my private files on the Internet?
No, the only files Grouper makes available are those you explicitly decide to share with a group, and only with authenticated group members. Files that you are not sharing with a group are completely private and are not served by Grouper over the Internet.
Does Grouper contain any spyware or adware?
No, we canít stand these programs ourselves and would not consider pushing them onto you.
Can I get a Trojan horse or Virus from using Grouper?
Grouper will not download any file to your computer that you havenít explicitly requested to download from a Grouper member. Since you can only download personal files from people you trust using Grouper, it is unlikely that downloaded files will purposely include a virus. However, because Grouper allows your friends to share ANY file with you, it is best to play it safe and check all files downloaded by using Grouper with an anti-virus software before opening them. You should also configure your anti-virus software to automatically scan all downloaded files.
Is Grouper Secure?
Yes, the first layer of defense is that only invited group members can access only the files that you chose to share with them, keeping shared files closed from public view. The second layer occurs when you communicate with group members via IM or chat. All communication data is fully encrypted using strong encryption to prevent others from monitoring your conversations. The third layer secures over the Internet file transfers (uploads, downloads, file listing and streaming). All data transferred in this operation is also fully encrypted using strong encryption and only the other intended user can decrypt the information. In some cases, your Grouper communication may be routed via other users in the Grouper P2P network. Grouper encryption protects you from potential eavesdropping from malicious users, regardless of whether they use Grouper.
In addition, your copy of Grouper software will not send any information in response to an incoming request for file listing or file download received from the Internet, unless it can authenticate the caller to be a valid group member. This ensures a high degree of privacy between you and your group members
Can Grouper Networks see the files I am sharing with my groups?
No, Grouper Networks does not have any information regarding the files you share, download or stream and does not maintain a centralized index of shared files.
Why is Grouper encrypted?
Grouper is encrypted end-to-end because it uses the public Internet to transport your file transfers and text messages. Grouper encryption ensures that nobody can eavesdrop on your file transfers or read your instant messages even if they monitor your Internet connection
What type of encryption is used?
Grouper uses the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard, Rijndael) encryption algorithm, with 256 bits key size. For more on Grouper encryption please click here. Each group has a cryptographically strong private key that is used for authentication, encryption and decryption of group communications.
How does Grouper ensure that your user records cannot be tampered?
Grouper Networks maintains the group keys and securely delivers them only to authenticated group members over SSL. All sensitive information sent from peer to peer using Grouper is encrypted using group keys. All network requests for file browsing, downloading or streaming are authenticated. Requests sent by non-group members are not served. All communications between your Grouper software and the Grouper web server are fully secure using SSL with 128bits key to ensure the privacy of your Grouper account information (user name, password and email.)
Can I have a person outside of my groups contact me within Grouper?
No, only group members can contact each other through Grouper or your provided email address.
