I havent tried it, but I want to since my Samsung only reads compusa dvd-rs.
You should be able to connect your computers 2nd IDE cable to the drive and leave the xbox power connected to the drive. If you power on the box then the PC it should be read as a local drive on your PC & you can flash away....in theory _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic

I'm surprised your sammy only reads compusa brand of dvd-r's I have three samsungs and they read TDK, SONY, SpinX (generic) and compusa fine. I have only had problems with Maxell and Memorex DVD+Rs.

ModGod, while those are the brand names who are the actual manufacturers of the dvd's? I found that my sammy would not read Fuji DVD -rs at all.. come to look in DVDdecrytper that they were some funky RSo maker while the CompUSA DVD-rs are Princo's. Now I try to find Princo's(which I think the TDK's are) and use those... _________________ GTGene

Well damn.
I was hopeing that it would be easier than that
Just last night I put back together my Xtender case. HAHA I love the thing but its an ass and a half to put back together! Oh well, I guess its better than wasting tons of money on waisted CDs.
I Wasted 2 Memorex DVD-Rs trying to upgrade to XOS 2.3 last night.
What killed me was the DVR-R I made for XOS 2.1 worked fine! ARGH!!!
I ended up upgrading to XOS 2.3 via FTP (using XBMC) but I still want it to use more disk types.
Oh well here goes nothing! _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

Oooooookay.
I was about to open up my drive and dive right in when I read a little bit more.
There are 2 types of Philips drives the VAD6011, and the newer VAD6035.
The firmware upgrade is suposedly for the VAD6011.
At the time I cannot find an update for the VAD6035, which is the drive I have.
The VAD6035 apparently comes in the 1.6 Xboxes. I have read all over that these can read pretty much any CD, I beg to differ.
On the list of things that people have said it can read is CD-Rs, just this morning I tried to rip a Music CD with XBMC that was burned on CD-R with no luck.
Can anyone else with a 1.6 Philips drive read CR-Rs? Or was that just a bad burn? _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

Oh and just in case somone was searching the forums in the future. Here is the link on "how to".
I hate searching for results and "Almost" getting results, its worse than not finding anything at all. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

If you try it keep in mind its for VAD6011. Make sure to read your model number first.
I dont think there is an "easy" way to do it as it also requires you to open the drive and adjust a pot. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

I meant upgrade the firmware. They had a new version for the Samsung 'coming soon' but didnt say how to update the firmware. I guess I will be the first to try the PC method. _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic

HOLY CRAP!!!
My Xbox reads CD-R's! I never even thought to try it until I saw this post. All three of these have worked for me.
Ridata CD-R -- music cd
Shop4Tech -- Outlaw Golf backup
AT&T CD-R --- music cd
I think the AT&T discs are made by Verbatim. I don't know the actual model number of my drive, but it is a Philips and the Xbox date is September of 04. _________________ Xbox Version 1.6

I saw that too, but wasnt about to try & adjust some ohms!
How would that be done anyway? The tut is a little fuzzy. by adjusting the screw? what would test the ohms a voltmeter? he said the POT terminals tested were 1,2,3, but which gives the reading we are looking for?
Useful info- I read that phillips or thompson drives can be fixed to read anything by wiping a blob of solder of 2 contact points near the IDE cable...maybe someone can correct me for anyone that comes to this thread with dvd problems _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic

yeah my buddy didnt have any of the equipment that guy used. he just used his judgment. he said he turned the screw clockwise 1/8 of a turn. then tested the drive to see if it read his disk. im pretty sure he had to adjust it one more clockwise 1/8 of a turn to get it to read his disks.
**please be very carefull doing it this way. i dont want anyone mad at me because they screwed up their dvd drive or xbox up doing it this way.** _________________ [RIP Radio]
